buying a muzzleloader in the states
« on: April 19, 2004, 07:36:12 AM »
i must sound like a broken record because this question is similar to my other questions about shopping the states. what i want is to buy a muzzleloading rifle from cabela's. either an1863 zouave or a percussion kentucy rifle. maybe a C & B revolver in the future.i know renegade went through all the paper work to buy a centerfire from a private owner a few years back but then didn't get it.i've heard guys at canadian gunnutz say they bought a muzzleloader and just declared i at the border. that i doubt. anyone here do this? i will also contact ATF and Canada customs as well as the CFC.

Before the Treaty of the Americas and 911, I ordered a CVA kit from Dixie, and simply showed my FAC at the post office and picked it up.

I think it depends if the US restrictions against selling to non-resident aliens applies to ML's as well as centre fires.  I believe that the US regulations on ML's are different than CF's (I think they can buy them by mail order).  If this is the case with non-resident sales, I think the advice you received before may be accurate.  I think if you present a gun at the border with a PAL, you would be allowed to import it (subjuect to the payment of all duties and taxes).  I don't know how they handle the registration issue.

Are you still at it?? :) You can purchase a m/l in the u.s. PROBLEMS: it is illegal for any u.s. retailer to sell a firearm to a non-resident alien (which is what we are.) You would have to e-mail the b.a.t.f. about that. You will also need to pre-register and pre-authorize entry of the firearm into canada. a very long and tedious procedure. The only one you can bring in yourself is a flintlock, as they are not considered "firearms" per se under the legislation. Forget about the blackpowder pistol. restricted or prohibited depending on the barrel. Rene was just in winnipeg, and he was looking for a rifle at cabela's but decided to order it through a dealer in canada to save alot of hassle. my advise.. call a dealer here and ask them about ordering you what you want.
you wanna take my guns? go ahead, it's your arm!

know any dealers that carry these? some one said wholesale sporting goods out of edmonton might. i can never seem to find a canadian dealer for what i want. as for the pistol, cap-and-balls show up at gunshows and occasionally at SIR so i'll just keep my eyes open when my restricted arrives.

i also think that the rifles i mentioned are actually made by navy arms so if they have a canadian dealer i should have no further use for cabela's. i wonder if anyone is planning to open a cabela's up here?
