Did anybody read Gil Gilchrist's (director of NRA Competitive Shooting Div) article in the April 2004 issue of Shooting Sports USA?

The article is called Competitor's Corner and is on the back of the front cover.

If so what is he talking about?

Was it the Hunter Rifle Silhouette rule changes?

Who is stiring up the trouble?

Lucho,  I did read that article, and I thought it was pretty stern. I don't know who it is directed to; but posts on here about jumping ship to a new association won't help silhouette if his comments were directed there.

Lucho,

Like you, I've been giving that one some thought and I'd guess that we're not the focus of the message. It's pretty cryptic but it seems to me that it's mostly aimed inward.

Al,

Agreed. We really are in a situation where anyone trying to foment some sort of schism is not helping the game. I don't know what it will take to move participation along -- or whether that's possible -- but, like you, I'm not going to support anything that will dilute the requirements just to increase attendance.

That does, however, bring up another point:

SSUSA may not be perfect (even if they do allow me to write the occasional article for them!   ) but it's the only printed 'voice' that comp shooters have. Even so, the subscription rate is only around 15% of the total number of registered competitors! Let's face it; the days when the Rifleman was seriously competition-oriented are gone and won't return, and that makes it pretty obvious that, no matter what game we play, those of us shooting competitively need our own magazine. I can't believe that anyone is stumped by the $10/year cost --  we probably all spend more than that on lunch at a match! -- so, if that's not the problem, how do we improve the readership level?

With the understanding that only about 2.5% of the NRA membership are competitive shooters, that most of the organization's money is directed toward Second Amendment issues and that the magazine budget is limited, is there any input? (Nobody 'up there' asks my opinion on much -- OK, they not only don't ask me anything, they barely take my calls! :)  -- but I can certainly forward suggestions to where they belong...)

lucho,

I doubt Gilchrest knows what he said.

His past actions show that he has an intense dislike of competive shooters.  We would all be better off without him.

At best he is a do nothing (at least he is doing less harm that way).

Hi Ernie,

i might suggest a formal subscription drive at the matches.  if we were to send subscription forms out to the clubs and have them drive enlistment at the match we may get better penetration.  at this point we seem to be pretty passive regarding increased enrollment.  we could actualy give out subscriptions as awards...  perhaps even consider them as an anniversary present for your wife...  valentine's day presents?  hi honey...  look what wonderful thing you will be getting in the mail every month next year!!!!!

Sandy already gets the magazine.
Of course, she's a better shot than I am too...
(Please, no remarks about EVERYONE being a better shot than I am! )

Dave I.  Good idea about subscriptions given out at matches. Have one ready to give away at my next match.  Read the article - don't have any idea what he was talking about.  Never have been good at reading between the lines.

There wasn't anything to be found between the lines. Somebody irritated him and he used the column to stamp his foot about it. Not very encouraging, not to mention that English seems to be a recent second language for him. Nevertheless, the magazine is entertaining, informative, cheap and prints Nomad's articles. I wish they'd make him editor. I've subscribed ever since they put my picture on the cover. (No, wait, that was "Newsweek." Never mind.)

Gentlemen,

After reading this post I contacted the SB Silhouette Director Mark Conners and asked what was the meaning of the letter, he advised he had no idea, that pretty well summed up what I thought, the right not knowing what the left is doing. So I will continue on and let this like so many things said by the directors of competitions fall on deaf ears.

When they show up at the Sunshine Classic, Southern National and/or the Midsouth Classic, then I'll listen and be more than happy to supply my opinion. Just my .02 cents

I now have it on good authority that the letter was directed at some Black Powder Cartridge Sil shooters.  Apparantly they were unhappy about the dates for the National Championships and some new rule changes.

Maybe DantheMan can enlighten us as to what rules changes are causing the trouble.
