First, TELL them at the ticket counter that you've got an UNLOADED firearm in the bag or suitcase. If it's a weapon in a locked hard-sided case that's inside a larger suitcase, they need to put a written firearm declaration inside the larger bag, close to the locked case. If you've got a locking, hard-sided rifle case, the airline should put a firearm declaration inside the case. You keep the key. If the screeners get an alarm they should have the airline page you to sort it out. Ammo in ths same suitcase is OK, but it's got to be in original or MTM-type boxes, not just loose in a Crown Royal bag. Bottom line is unload it, declare it, lock it. Good hunting!
