LFN or WFN for 45LC
« on: April 07, 2004, 06:22:13 PM »
The money is in my pocket and I am planing on getting my third LBT mold.  I am quit happy with the 225g WFN for my 45acp and the 280g WFN seems to do the job in the 44mag but I wonder about which to get for the 45LC (5 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk).  Cylinder throats run .4525" to .453" and the barrel runs .4515" or so, with a hint of tightness under the frame threads.

Most, 90% of the loads, will be loaded to 900+- fps for plinking, but I want the option to load it up for hunting, say up to 1150-1200fps, if that is reasonable.

I have been thinking .453" 300g LFN PB but don't know what you mean on (or which I should pick) your mold selection site about nose length of .4" or .45".  I imagine the .45" nose has more lead (WW) out of the case then does the .4" nose which could make a difference in chamber pressure.  Will both work in the Ruger Blackhawk?  Is one nose length more accurate then the other?  If I want to bust rocks at 200 yards is the LFN a better choice the the WFN.  Thanks for any advice you can give.  I still remember talking to you on the phone (yes I was one of the one's who used up some of you time that way, but I got good advice) in the old days.  This method is not as good for us, but is probably a lot better for you.

LFN or WFN for 45LC

I'm sorry about pruning the phone time out.  My life was hectic when I answered it daily, but now it far to hectic to even consider taking time for it.  But I did enjoy talking with my customers personally.

The LFN is the best long range rock crusher, and the .45 nose is right for SBH's.  .4 nose fills the Freedom arms guns.  .5 nose is right for long cylinder revolvers like Redhawks.  The longer a bullets nose, the less lead in the case, which means more powder room and lower pressure at a given velocity.

If you weren't trying to sell gravel from your rock quarry, I'd reccomend a lighter bullet in WFN, where speeds of 900 +- are of great interest.  Their longer bearing length to weight ratio is beneficial to accuracy at lower speeds, and if one wants to take small to medium game with the light load, it works VERY well.  Of coarse you know that as you own WFN's already.
