Anyone bowfish?
« on: March 17, 2004, 03:17:10 AM »
I was wondering if anyone here bowfishes?

I have been playing around for a while and I'll confess. I haven't nailed anything  yet. I do notice that the rocky stream bottoms raises cain with the points.

I have a 40 lb. recurve that is just for bowfishing and I plan to obtain a new reel for the bow. I plan to get a couple more cable rigged arrows and see what this spring will bring.

Did it once a few years ago, lots of fun from a canoe.
Used an old Bear Whitetail.  The one with 4 wheels on it.
I would get a good reel, I can't think of the name of mine right now but it works real good.

I have bowfished for about 25 years now. The thing to remember when shooting at a fish under water is, the deeper the fish is, the further you need to aim UNDER it. This is due to light refraction. It will take some time to master. After that, it's a piece of cake. As far as the bottom  dulling your points, I always carry a small fine file with me to touch the point. Without a sharp point, if you try shoot a BIG carp or garfish, it may just bounce off.

bigbore,I use to many, many years ago.Had a Bear 50# recurve,of there were no componds bows then.Use to fish off a power co. fishing platform behind a dam. They would turn some of the turbines on,the water would start to boil, then the fun began.Shot mostly garr, some cats and drum that folks were trying to get over guardrail to help them out.But the most fun was the Garr. You should have seen the people on the platform cut out when I would drag one of those Garr over the railing.Having only hit them in the tail, they had the "business end" working at full bore. You would be surprise how many folks are afraid of them.....don't understand why  :P .Here in Bama you can,t shoot a gamefish,of course unless the rules have changed over the years.Anyway have fun.If you have Garr in your neck of the woods, try them. They are a lot of fun when you land them           Rick

I've been doing it for about the past 4-5years now.  I use an old Bear 45# Kodiak Hunter recurve, a hand wind reel, and cable rigged fish arrows with Muzzy fish heads on them.  I use 200# test line, as this works great for the reel I use, plus it helps keep the line from cutting into your hands too bad after sticking a fish.  I checked some of the lakes down at school a couple of days ago, and the carp are starting to jump....just a couple more weeks till they are spawning hard core!!!!  My old man said that they are jumping a little in the rivers up here at home.  I normally just shoot carp, but I plan on going to Lake Erie to try for some huge carp this spring, and maybe the Ohio river for some gar(never tried to shoot them).  Like what was said earlier, you do have to aim low on the carp due to light refraction, and be prepared to miss alot more than you hit(it would be hilarious if I would tally up my hit/miss ratio...but hell, thats half the fun in it).  I would recommend the Muzzy heads if you aren't using them already.  Just like their hunting heads, the very tip unscrews to replace with a new one, and if they aren't too bad, you can use a file on them like was stated earlier.  Good luck on 'em this year.

I also forgot to add about what I have noticed when using my bow on them, and I feel it applies to yours as well.  Try to limit your shots to carp/forage fish to within 10yds. at the most.  Granted you may hit them further away, but with a 40# bow, it most likely won't penetrate far enough into the fish to maintain a good enough hold to drag them in....IMHO.
