Tidal Mink + otter trapping ?
« on: April 19, 2004, 12:03:58 PM »
Here is the deal, I trap on the coast of Maine in some salt marshes. The main stream in the marsh runs for about 2 miles and has many small feeder streams. There are also small ditches that have been cut from the main channels to the tree line on either side. These ditches were cut many years ago and are about 2-3' wide and covered with grass. Perfect spots for blind sets. My question is how to rig a 110 or 220 on a float system of some kind, as the water in the ditch flucuates by 3-4 feet every 6 hours when the tide changes. I want my traps to be working at all tides and need some ideas? I would also like to know if a 220 would catch a mink, as there are both otter and mink and I would like to set a trap that could handle an otter and still give me a shot at a mink?

Make different sets for the two animals and you will catch more of each.
 Otter
Look around and under the red cedars (or evergreen trees) growing next to the creek banks as far out into the meadows as they grow. Here you WILL find otter toilets set these up.I like the 280's.Foot traps will work too.
Mink
I set the bank holes of muskrats for the mink. Set the holes up closest to the wood line as I can get.Blind set the holes even if they dont look like anything is useing them. The tide makes no matter, the mink will enter these holes wet or dry.

I also set snares where the mink are travling on top of the meadows. But I know you cant do that in Maine.
