Aftermarket muzzleloader barrel for Contender?
« on: December 22, 2002, 01:12:00 PM »
Anyone have comments/advice on any of the aftermarket ML barrels for a Contender? I've been considering one from Virgin Valley.

Aftermarket muzzleloader barrel for Contend

Just got one from VVCG for my Encore. Having a little
problem with the fit of scope base to barrel which can be
alleviated, but I would definitely recommend them. Both
inside and out, this Douglas barrel is spotless. I can see
absolutely no flaw in the bore at all. It has been very
professionally done by the work of both Douglas and
VVCG.

hmmmmmmm........thought I'd already answered
this, but don't see the post here.

Barrel + scope mount + shipping = $391, a
little stiff, but ya oughta see the precision
work on her!!! Will post later when I get
her sighted in.  Hope the weather isn't too
cold today -- IA 2d ML Season started Monday!

ON SALE?????     That's a hundred bucks MORE than
getting it straight from the horse with your own specs! AND
with the $35 scope mount to boot!

Got mine sighted in today. Things were a little rocky at first.
Tried shooting H777 in it and found the "crud ring" to be
totally unacceptable. It was very hard to run a spit patch
through the crud ring even after one shot in this new barrel.
Still had some Goex Clear Shot so shot a few rounds with
it. No crud ring. Unlike the T7 with shots all over the target,
150gr (actual weight) of Clear Shot behind a 200gr Dead
Center .40 saboted bullet with Win 209, had the bullet holes
tickling each other.

ML barrels for Contenders

DES, I've got a 16 1/4" 50 cal ML barrel for my Contender, made by Dave Van Horn (www.mygunroom.com/dvgunshop/vhbarrels.html).  :-)  I also considered buying a barrel from VVCG or Bullberry, but was not quite as expensive w/ DVH and turnaround was a little quicker. The barrel looks to be of good quality, but I honestly don't think I've had a chance to shoot it enough to know what it's really capable of. One thing about a short barrel like this---there's LOTS of unburned powder (Pyrodex) blowi ng out the barrel after the shot.... I'm satisfied w/ the early velocities--1470 fps w/ 240 gr 45 cal Sierra JHP/Knight sabot/Winchester 209 primers.   I'd keep him in mind, as well, but be sure your specs are understood. I specified a Weaver mount d/t for 6 screws, but it was not included in the package when it arrived.    He sent one to me quickly. I also specified the dovetail locks to be set up to use w/ a Pach forend adaptor (14" barrel). When the barrel arrived, I found the dovetail locks were set up for a 16" barrel.  I've been using the barrel w/ a 10" forend adaptor while awaiting the arrival (I told him not to rush) of an adaptor he's going to make me so I can use the barrel w/ a Pach forend. He offered to make me a new barrel, but that didn't really seem necessary. Gary T.
