Gas check bullets for 500 S&W

Getting everything together to load lead gas check 370 grain bullets for my S&W 500 mag.  Anything special I need to know about loading gas check bullets?  I heard they are supposed to reduce leading in the barrel.

I am changing the subject but thats when I was in Vietnam, April 1968 to end of Aug. 1969.  Yea, I liked it so well I extended.  What can I say.

Not sure about the load I will use yet or the powder.

I know somebody with experience on gas checks will post. Me, I only use jacketed and hard cast bullets. Never tried gas checks, but thinking about it.....so, am looking forward to those who respond. I'm considering loading up some gas check bullets for 30-30.

I don't know if gas checked bullets will lead the barrel less. I do know that you'll be able to load to higher velocity with the gas checks.

Can you add the gas checks on a regular single stage press, or do you need special equipment to do it? How is it done?

You can use the data for loading cast bullets to load gas checked cast bullets.
You can approach maximums better with a good alloy and a gas checks without leading.  
BUT you can lead a barrel even with gas checks.  There are still lead bearing surfaces.
It just takes time to work up a load and an alloy to get what works that you like.  The results are worth finding and fun to shoot.
There is another benefit of using gas checked cast bullets.
The uniform bases of the gas checks.

I used the RCBS 150 gr. Flat-Nose GC in my Marlin 30-30 and my Remington 760 Carbine 30-06 with good success.
I don’t have those rifles anymore, but I bought a Contender with a SS 14" 30-30 barrel three years ago.  As I was working up some loads for it, I came across some of my old cast bullets.
They are great in the Contender.
You cannot add the gas checks to a non gas check bullet.
What it is is a cast bullet with a base made for applying a gas check.  You crimp on the gas check in a bullet sizing die, usually nowadays in a lubricator-sizer press.

How fast you can push the gas check bullets depends on how hard they are. I have pushed some Lead Head bullets to about 2,500 fps. with absolute no leading. The guy I bought them from said he has pushed them to 2,700 fps. with no leading, I believe him. With the weight of bullets I`ve got I should be able to push them to over 3,000 fps. and may just see how fast I can get them befor I start to get leading, but good hard cast gas checked bullets are good hunting bullets, just make sure you have a big flat point on them, Keith style.

The load I settled on is 44.5 Grains of H110 1801 fps with 370 grain Cast Performance bullets.

Don--- Well I just got my first order of gas checks in for the 500. 440 CP's-- In 20 some years I have never used them, but am switching to all lead where I can. I did NOT know the bullets would come with gas checks installed  :roll:  I therefore bought a bag of 1000, which I now have on hand. Guess I will use them to work up some shot loads for the ole 500  :-D  I believe for the most part, they just push on, or should.?? A handheld 410 comes to mind.  :wink: It is, as has been stated, if the bullet is hard enough, with the GC, you can push them with no leading, to a point. Some of this stuff these days is harder than the Jacketed bullets.  :eek:   8)  Good luck.!!

I got them (Gator Checks) from Bullet Swaging Supply. They're superb crimp-on chex. Good prices too. He has some chex for other odd calibers too.

I ended up getting (five boxes I think) of the Hornady JHP bullets for this round in error and am kinda stuck with them and have no need for them.

Any of you guys interested in buying them at a deep discount?
