Winchester M94 Trapper
« on: April 07, 2004, 02:31:11 PM »
The SASS shooters handbook states that the rifle should have a barrel over 16".  Can it be 16" or over.  I have a Winchester M94 Trapper .45 Colt with a 16" barrel.  Is this legal to shoot in competition?

You're legal for SASS with the Trapper, but the 9-round capacity in the tube may be a slight handicap. Many stages require 10 rounds, so you would have to load one more on the clock. Might be able to get around this with .45 Schofield rounds, but I don't know how they would feed in the Trapper.

I used to have a Trapper, which I sorely regret selling, in 45 Colt.  Before I knew anything about the 45 Schofield, I tried timming off 1/4" off some 45 Colt brass and used them in the Trapper to get 10 rds.  They fed and cycled without a hitch.  Remember that not all Trappers, like anything else we shoot, are going to be the same.  It may not work as well out of your's.  Only thing to do is to load up some dummy rounds and see how the work, if this is what you want to do to get more rounds in the mag.

Can the spring in the magazine along with the metal piece that sits over the spring in the mag be trimmed down to allow one more 45LC?

Howdy,

I don't think you can trim enough spring to fit 10 45LC cartridges.. maybe Schofields.

My wooden nickel's worth.  Keep the gun and use it to get your feet wet.  It won't bring enough on the used market, to help you much and you can always use it as a brush gun with the stronger 45 loads.  I don't recommend investing a lot in gunsmithing a gun like this one.
But remember, CAS is about that rugged individualism and that little kid in each of us.. so do what you REALLY want to do.

Adios,
