scope mount set screw ???
« on: April 16, 2004, 06:56:24 AM »
last night i noticed there is a large set screw on the front end of the scope mount on my 243 ultra varminter. on the side of scope mount there is also a smaller set screw that looks like it locks the larger set screw. there was no directions or explanation of these screws in any of the paper work that came with the rifle. what are these for ????

The way I understand, The screw in the front is to stabize the front of the
mount, The screw in the side is ti lock the stabizing screw. That is
what I have been reading in some of the post. I could be wrong,
one of the few times in my life :-D  :-D  :)  Marv.

You are right on target Marv (pun intended). Loosen the side set screws (both, just a bit), turn the set screw in until it contacts the barrel, nice contact but don't tighten it so much that you torque the scope rail out of being straight and up away from the barrel, lightly firm is enough. Then tighten the side sets screws and you are good to go with no vertical movement or vibration of the scope rail when you fire you gun....<><....

Perfect Timing.  Thanks for the instructions MSP, I was wondering the very same thing last night on my 223 Ultra.  I put on the ring bottoms (Millett Angle-Loc - you recommended) to see if the "LOW" height rings would work with the scope.  They would not clear the scope, need the "MED" height rings.  Anyway, I was going to find out about that "Set Screw" before I went any further.

Glad my post was of assistance GrandpaMike, I use both Millet high and medium angle loc rings on my Handi's depending on the size of the objective and ocular lens, they work great. I did get a couple of sets of Weaver high rings on e-bay to try on a Sportster and I did need the high's in the weaver rings....<><....

Well! I'm feeling better already...apparently I wasn't the only one that didn't know the difference between a standard scope mount and the Ultra mount . :|  :oh:

As long as we're on the subject of the Ultra scope mount, can this be used on any Handi? If so, why aren't they the standard mount? I need another scope mount because I stole the mount off my 7mm-08 to use on the Buffalo Classic.

Yes BB, the standard and Ultra scope rail (mount) can be used interchangeably. The 3 mounting holes and mounting screws are exactly alike. They are not needed in most cases and since the extra inch in the front is usually not needed I guess they just put the standard 5" mounts on the Handi's. I find them useful when mounting a red dot further forward than a normal scope, they are especially useful when I mount an older Weaver Quik Point on my Handi....<><....

MSP Ret,
Thanks for the reply. It makes sense to me to get the Ultra mount if only to allow you more options in mounting. I hated to put a scope on that Buffalo Classic, but if you could see how thick my last pair of glasses is, well I guess getting older beats the alternative.

Before NEF started putting the set screw on, folks would make a support by filling in the space between the barrel and scope rail with epoxy, making sure to put a releasing agent on the barrel.  That is one of the accuracy modifications, in concert with the rubber o-ring under the forearm mounting stud and a good trigger job.

i bought enough of these ultra rails for all my barrels a month or so ago and i never noticed the extra screws.

i glued two rails with some thermal epoxy a while back, and i guess i got lucky, all the set screws were not touching the barrel, so tonight i loosened up the side screws and then snugged the main set screw against the barrel.

tnx !!!!!!

i hate to clog up this thread but did any of you have trouble with the small mounting screws shearing off under recoil ? thats why i ended up gluing mine on.

I drilled and tapped that front hole in all my Handi Rifle scope bases. It looked like a good Idea so I just did them all that way.
shot placement is everything.

Scattergunner, Yes the 6/48's that come with the scope rails are a bit thin but usually hold OK, but they have been known to shear or strip on occasion, 8/40's are stronger. It is advisable according to my gunsmith to place some exopy on the barrel and scope rail befire tightening up the screws and loctiting them, but be careful to keep the epoxy away from the mounting screws and clean all mating surfaces of all oil and grease. Also he tells me to mount the scope rail once, do it right, and leave it on, do not continue to mount it and take it off to try iron open or peep sights (like I do). The combination of the screws and epoxy should hold. The exception would be on those of us lucky enough to get scope rails mounted on 12 gauge shotgun barrels, in my case my smoothbore and rifled shotgun barrels each have a scope rail permanantly attached using 8/40 screws and epoxy, they are correctly and safely attached..The 6/48's, especially the shorter ones needed on the thin 12 gauge barrels are not strong enough, IMHO. If the scope rail let go under recoil, it could get painful....<><....
