Choosing the proper Chokes to buy
« on: April 13, 2004, 09:59:13 AM »
Hello,
I just bought 4 choke tubes. I only have the Full choke tube.
So I order 2 from Mossberg, Modified and Imp Cylinder and 2 are from Hastings, Imp Modified and Extra Full.

Did I make the right choice?
I didn't buy a Skeet one. Should have I?

Choosing the proper Chokes to buy

The correct choke is a function of the range you intend to hit your target.  Typically our objective is to have a uniformly spaced pattern of about 30 inches diameter at the engagement distance.  That means a skeet choke for the typical skeet distances (22-24 yards), and a mod choke for 16 yard trap (where the target is hit at about 34 yards.)  For trap handicap distances (20+ yards back of the trap house and an engagement distance of about 38-39 yards), one might choose an improved mod, and if you are one of the really good shooters with a handicap at the back fence (27 yards), you might have a full, extra full, or super full.   You match the choke to the distance you are shooting.
