Where can I locate PRS Lee moulds?
« on: July 28, 2004, 03:18:49 PM »
I am trying to locate the PRS Lee moulds.  Can anyone help?  Do they come in .44 and .38 cal.?  I am a long time CAS shooter and now want to try BP Cartridge and looking for a good BP mould.

Unless things have changed very very recently, you will have to hope that someone who has previously purchased the mould(s) you are looking for is willing to part with it or you will have to get in on a group purchase or you will have to custom order from Lee.

Custom orders from Lee carry a $100 set up charge on top of the $50 mould price (6 cavity).  They will wave the set up charge if 25 or more moulds are ordered.  So, you either need to get in on an existing group order or find enough other people interested to order the required minimum.  Of course, if you are so inclined, you can special order just for yourself.  I was very fortunate to get in the latest (as far as I know) order that was finalized three weeks ago.

There are three specialty BP cartridge bullet moulds of which I am aware.  The PRS is 45 cal, the Mav is 44 cal and the Snakebite is 38 cal.

Kilgore is right, but you may find that Dick Dastardly will have a couple to sell after the next order is completed in about 90 days.

Hey Cozahome,
If ya don't find a PRS mould, I have an aquaintance that makes boolits on a semi-surreptious-commercial basis. Some of his moulds have a fairly wide lubricant groove that might work for BP.  He claims 1" groups with his '51 Conversions and Clean Shot. -------- I don't remember if that was at 3 yds. or 250 yds. --------- We wuz havin' Tequila at the time.

You can find the pards that "broker" the PRS style molds over on The Frontier Spot. ( http://www.frontierspot.org/viewforum.php?f=9&sid=af3dadd63175680d96217de839391281 )

The slugs are called PRS - .45, The MAV -.44, and The Snakebite - .357

There is also a 45-70, 400 grain one called The Dastardly/PRS.

You can order these from Lee on an individual basis but the cost is a good bit higher, as noted above. However, a good six cavity mold will cost pretty close to that amount from ANY maker! I have used the .357, the .45, and the 45-70 molds and I can tell you that the quality is excellant and ease/speed of casting is downright incredible!!!!!!

If you're looking for the MAV for the 44-40 I cast them and sell the ones I cast.   Don't have to do it under the table, either, cus I got my FFL to manufacture Ammo.  No excise tax unless I sell completed ammo, which I have no intention of doing.

I'll cast them out of wheel weights or out of a 30-1 lead tin mix.  I only have the MAV cus I only shoot 44WCF in pistols.  I have no problem getting adequate lubrication with traditional designs in bigger rifle bullets.

I use the Lee 452-255-RF and have had excellent results with BP and that new stuff. It holds quite a bit of lube and works very well in my pistols and short rifle.
