Lube recomendations, suggestions?
« on: May 23, 2004, 10:24:02 AM »
I am fairly new to casting and have been looking to get a good lube.  How about some educated opinions. I am looking at Rooster Red, Apache Blue, Lyman Super Moly, Orange Magic, RCBS and Lee Liquid Alox.

What I have been using is Lee Alox, let dry and then fill the grooves with a mixture of melted RCBS lube/Beeswax/Olive Oil.  These seem to work OK but they are ugly as sin, and I cant help but thinking the Lee Alox 'globbed'  unevenly all over the place from tumble lubing cannot help accuracy.  I want to use Cast bullets in my 30-06 and 35 Whelen and get a fair velocity without leading.  I read a lot of the past posts, and see that a lot of folks do not like the hard lubes, so I am wondering...which of these hard sticks would work best mixed with Beeswax and olive oil????...or is this not a good idea?  I would like a bullet that is very functional, yet I have some consideration of how 'presentable' they are in appearance.  Is it worth it to use the ugly Lee Alox first?

I use the liquid alox first for high velocity (2000+ fps) loads.  It's more even and "presentable" if thinned (I use mineral spirits).
I like the soft lubes: NRA 50/50 or Felix Lube (www.castpics.net/research.htm)

You answered another question I was wondering about....thinning the Alox.  I left a bottle out in my shop in the cold and it thickened up a lot in the bottle.  I was wondering what to add to bring it back up to a more useable consistency.  Thanks everybody.

I put a tall glass 1/2 full of water in the microwave. After heating I put the liquid alox in the glass and in a few minutes the alox flows easily.

I have also thinned with alcohol right before use. The alcohol evaporates quickly so the bullets dry faster.
