Enfield "Jungle Carbine" Suprise!
« on: December 01, 2003, 12:04:49 PM »
Hey All,

I bought one of the Enfield Mk5 Jungle Carbines a few months ago and frankly was in no hurry to shoot the thing since everybody said it kicked like a mule and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside  .  I had it in the safe but every trip to the range I found some excuse not to take it.  Finally I decided that was pretty silly- if it kicked I'd just put on a slip-on recoil pad or a sandbag between it and my shoulder.
I thought I'd "warm up" with some cast bullet loads that I had pretty good luck with in all my other Enfields- just 10gr of 231 and a 180gr bullet.  Kinda like a big 22- really fun to shoot and it doesn't kick at all.  Also good for training a newcomer.  I was really disappointed when I looked at the target.  Didn't even keep all 10 on a 12x12 from 50 yards!  Yuck!  What a dog!    :x
I had some reloads with me- Hornady 150gr and 38gr of AA-2230c- just something I picked out of the Accurate manual because I seem to have quite a bit of that cheep powder.    Shot 5 and looked--What a shock!!  They were all touching!  Shot 5 more- same deal!  Couldn't believe it so I shot 10 more.  Had a few leak out but still kept everything in a nice tidy 1" group!  Now I'm not some super shooter so this really came as a pleasant suprise.  Yeah, it got a little tiring after 20 rounds from the bench but still it didn't kick as bad as the K-31 or that Turkish 8mm in a Yugo!!
Quite a gun!  It's a definite KEEPER!   :-D    :-)
BTW- this is a great group.  Lots of knowledge gets passed around here.

ramaslama,
Great job with that Mk 5!!!  I once gave my Dad a Jungle Carbine .303 that we had sporterized back in the 50's.  It turned out well after a beautiful re-bluing, restocking and permenant floorplate installed.  I never recall shooting it (I'm left-handed and the Bishop Stock had a sharp cheekrest that made it too uncomfortable for me to use. So sad.....I loved the look of that carbine with that flash hider.  Only thing I don't like about those new Gibbs remakes in .308 Mk 5's are the barrel ports they put on them.

  I bought one , MK5 a year ago. Great gun! I wanted a stout little carbine for hunting in the swamp's and back water.  Ever since I took it out the first time, the thing has performed great. I consistently get groups at 1 inch or less at 50 to 100yds! I am very happy with the jungle carbine. A hog or deer don't stand a chance!

I had one in my hands two weeks ago, and turned it down in favor of a new Black Powder rifle. It was a .308  and in good condition. The biggest reason I turned it down, was the condition of the screws. Every screw on the gun was buggered up. I didn't know how available these screws would be, and figured the previous owner must have been careless with it to do that to it. A dealer friend of mine said a New Jersey importer he deals with said a big supply of Enfields are coming in, so we may see some good deals on them soon. I think they were Mark I's.

I've been wanting a jungle carbine for a while.  We only have 2 gun shops in Windsor Ontario, and absolutely all  the Enfields I've seen over the last couple of years have been sporterized.  What kind of $ in Canadian funds would I be looking at for an unaltered one if I ever get off my butt and got to Toronto?
