Wolf 7.62X39 HP or FMJ?
« on: May 20, 2004, 03:19:12 AM »
I have a Saiga, sporter version of an AK an it shoots both Wolf HP and FMJ fine.  Is ther much difference between these rounds?  Is the HP for hunting? or is it more stable like the  Sierra Match HPs.

My Romanian SAR-1 and Bulgarian SLR101S both eat that ammo up...stay away from the SP though...those are the only rounds that have ever jammed my AK's!  :x

deerhunter - the fmjs in 7.62x39mm are not hunting rounds, it is milsurp or milspec, but those bullets do not expand.  I would not use them unless you were pelt hunting.

The best hunting loads for that caliber are either the hp or the soft nose.  As NRAJOE found, the soft nose jam in his AK.  However, they don't jam in either of mine, but they are not Wolf loads.  I have found that my AK hunter (a Norinco NHM91 with long bbl) much prefers the S&B soft points for accuracy.  They are adequate for Whitetail.  HTH.  Mikey.

as far as hunting softpoints goes,
Find one with the least amount of exposed lead
such as PMC loads. The ones with large lead tips will "Stick"
to the ramp on a regular basis causing lots-o-Jams
in SKS or AK type weapons.
In the brush an SKS is a great Whitetail rifle, and the PMC ammo
does a pretty good job on them. It is also a lot of fun when you
"Scare up" a Yodle Dog too (Coyote)!!!

It sounds like its either "pointed soft points" (PSP) Remington bullets or "Speer magnum mag-tips" or a similair style(PMC) bullet for the sks thats all I use in my 30-06 and they sure do their job and really work well I just don't care for round nose bullets unless its a tubular feed like my 444 marlin lever action style rifle.                       BigBill
