A guy has one of these for sale --- .308.  I do not know anything about them.  Are they decent pieces?

Which one is it and how much?  Is it an MAS 36 bolt action, MAS 49/
MAS 49/56 semi-auto?                                 BigBill

I have both 49/56's in 7.5 and .308  and they shoot great.  I bought the 308 because of the cheaper surplus ammo.  The French MAS 49/56  Commando rifle is one of the best battle rifles ever made.

If, as Bill says, this is a MAS 49/56 converted to .308, it's kind of a crap shoot. Most of these were converted by a company called Century and people have reported a number of problems with those. Some conversions seem to work flawlessly, others do not. Problems range from rough chambers to inadequate gas return to cycle. Some have been coverted by a few gunsmiths who do the conversion and these seem to have been done correctly. Unless you can verify that this one works ok, and you still want one, I'd get one in the original 7.5X54 caliber. These work well with few exceptions.
