Whats your favorite holster?
« on: January 08, 2003, 11:32:13 PM »
I just bought a new 15" barreled Encore and was looking at getting a holster for hunting.  I have done searches on them and found a lot of nice ones but I hate to send for one and not like it and be stuck with it.  So, I figured on asking who likes what holsters and why.  Thanks for the info. :D

For my 10 inch barrels I have a nice black leather holster/belt that fox ridge sold a few years ago. I find it very heavy and pulling my pants down on long walks to and from the hunting spots.

My 14 inch barrels are for big game hunting. what i use with them is a sling. when I am walking i use the sling  and when i get to the woods I have the contender in my hand ready for a quick shot. when i get set up in my tree stand I use a "ez hanger" from team real tree. it screws in the tree and has 2 sections that can be moves around to place the gun in easy reach.
If you want I can send a picture of my setups.

:?  You dont carry a rifle in the woods in a gun case. Why do it to a hand cannon?  A sling is easier,& quicker. But if you just have to have a holster.Chech out pistol packaging. They have a bandlero style that is very good. My cannons are carried on a sling more than anything but the bandlero holster has its place & is very comfortable

Thanks for replying.
Please send those pictures you had said about
montecarloss@charter.net.

The reason I want a holster instead of a sling is because I travel through some heavy brush and want to have the gun protected,  I don't have a gun sliding around off my shoulder,  I pack in about 5 miles when it is still dark and then don't leave till it is dark and on a four wheeler I figured it would make it easier.

I recently bought one of the Pistol Packaging custom and expensive holsters and am not happy with it.  I have a 14" 7x30 Contender with a 30mm UltraDot red dot type sight on it.  The holster/gun fit is not very good or straight which allows the gun to fit cocked forward in the holster so virtually all of the weight of the gun is resting on the adjustment caps of the scope and the scope itself.

After some use and the holster leather conforming to the gun, it then lets the gun go to far down into the holster which makes it very difficult to get your fingers around the grip and get the gun out.  It now requires two hands to get the gun out i.e. one hand to hold the holster the other pulling on the gun.  The gun also settles so far down into the holster the barrel now protrudes about 1" out the open end bottom of the holster.

I sent an email back to PistolPak describing my problems asking for reccomendations for improvement and was very unhappy that I did not recieve any response back from them.  Maybe I should try again to contact them and give them ample opportunity to correct the problem.

This is the team realtree ez hanger with my contender. I use a heavy wire tie  around the rear swivel to hold the gun close. this will work anywhere i hunt even if i hunt from the ground. I can use the ez hanger as a shooting rest if needed. the part close to teh tree has 3 little hooks to hold calls and other small  things.

This is a picturre of the holster and belt. It does not protect the scope or open sights. It will NOT work with the weaver scope mount.  this it will pull down the pants. I am thinking about getting a pair of suspenders to help hold it up when hunting.

this is what I use If I am going to be riding the 4 wheeler or walking a real long way when I know I will not get a shot. I always carry this back pack with it and 14 inch barreled contender fits real nice in it along with my tree umbrella, the ez hanger safety harness hall line.
