9.3 x72r and paper patch
« on: June 05, 2004, 02:37:12 PM »
i searched and searched (repeat three times)  for a way to load my drilling with 1900 feet persecond loads and with a bullet that would give me big game pennetration..  then a nice chap on the cast bullet list said why dont i paper patch? sounds good to me, as gas checks, bullet jackets and etc dont come in the size i need and lead based bullets wont go 1900fps..  so anothre nice fella said to come here.... :P
so here goes..  can i get some cast 358 bullets in about 180-200 grains take the gas check off, heat the lube off in a pan of hot watter, and paper patche the bullet with a modern powder load to see how it all works.. ???  i cannot find a lead based bullet to try, or mould for that matter they all have gas checks.. so im wondering if a paper patch will work with bullet with grease grooves and a void on the base where the gas check goes.. seems like the riding porti on of lead  would be sparse.. if all works out well i can get a mould made for it if someone wiill make it, but im working on bore diameter, about .362-364, ferosafeing the chamber, checking into dies, 16 gauge 2 1/2 inch reloading and on and on for this beautifull drilling i lucked into.. so paper patching seems like a dream come true so i dont have to get into making custom copper jackets from over sized stock, injecting lead in an expensive press i dont wont to buy, probably riuning accuracy in the process of reforming the jackets... i can read the info on doing it but im not getting any where about what bullet types i can paper patch.. is a hollow base a big difference or can i just start of using reguar bullets? .. what about paper pathiching with the gas check on?  any comments welcome.. thanks dave

What bore/groove diameter are you looking for?  I can figure 9.3mm = .366 inches, but what it really is you have to measure.  If this is the size you need (it should be one to three thousandths bigger than groove size (for accuracy) it seems that you have a couple of options.

One would be to patch, and to find a .360 diameter boolet is no great trick.

Two would be to open up a standard mould by either using a cast boolet in it and turning it with an abrasive (see CASTPICS for the process) or putting a pair of small thin pieces of heat-resistant tape on either side of the cavity to open it up just a whisker.

what patch material for .001-.003 under bore..
« Reply #2 on: June 06, 2004, 04:56:15 PM »
im guessing from the material im finding that .001-003 under bore diameter would be using teflon tape??  the probem im having with the tape is its only 1/2 inch wide?  can i get wider teflon tape?? ..  is a gas check bullet design ok with teflon tape?? it seems with check removed then i have only a few driving bands that this would make it tough to get the bullet to keep centered and lined strait with the bore??  thanks dave..

Let me say from the beginning that I have limited experience in this - paper patching 12 ga slugs cast from Lyman mould - wrapping with 10-12 turns of paper to shim them to fit the smooth bore.  It did work very well - enabling me to hit bricks at 35 yards 4 times of 5 (with NO sights at all on the single barrel).

Wide teflon tape is available, but I don't have a source - you might have to post on several boards to find someone that does.

You're right in your concern about having an unsupported bore-riding section being a detriment to accuracy.

most 9.3 x72r guns are .366 and this is what is availabel from the jacketed bullet makers, and most mold makers.... my gun is in the .362-3.63 range as stated above.. pressures would exceed limits, and accuracy woould tend to be poor  with this scenario.. thanks tho.. dave.

fffffg-
Obtain a Lyman 358430 195 gr. mold and a .355 or .356 LEE push thru sizer. Cast the bullets out of 40:1 or 30:1 lead/tin alloy, no harder than that. Size bullets in the push thru die and patch with two wraps of 9 Lb. onionskin paper. This paper is about .002" thick. Airmail paper is about this also, but measure it. The patch will increase bullet diameter about .007" to .008".  Thinner paper if used (such as tracing paper) would allow you to use a larger bullet. The idea is to have a patched .363" bullet. This will give you a patched bullet that should work in your rifle. Good patching instruction can be found in the book by Paul Matthews "The paper jacket" from Wolfe publishing. Good Luck!

I happened to run across 3/4" thread sealer tape tonight at a site called Tape Monster. Looking for something else, or I never would have seen it.

There's a Brit looking for ways to cast bullets for his 9.3x62 over on the cast bullet forum at AR. Reading his thread might be worth your time.
