My Contender does not fire.
« on: March 19, 2004, 03:18:31 AM »
I took my Contender "Whistle Pig" hunting and after about 5 shots the trigger pull got heavy, then heavier and then failed to go off all together.  I took it apart and the hammer fell as I was taking the barrel off.  I cocked it again and when I pulled back on the trigger there was no contact between the trigger mechanism and the sear.  If I touched the sear with my screwdriver the hammer would fall.

I have done a trigger job on this frame and ground off the little spring that is in the trigger mechanism that has the little cup over it.  It has had thousands of silhouette rounds since then.  The trigger was at about 1.5 lb which is not as light as some but lighter than original.

My Question is:  What is wrong?  Is that spring compressed too much and need to be replaced or is there something else wrong?

Also, if someone has an exploded view of the Thompson Frame, what is the proper name for that spring or any other parts I may need to replace?

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

You said that the trigger doesn't touch the sear.  That would indicate that the trigger is depressed already when you cock the gun.
There is a little set screw adjustable from the inside of the frame over the left side of the trigger.  It sets the amount of trigger sear contact.  If it has worked loose and moved down in its hole it is holding the trigger in the pulled position and won't let the trigger move forward enough to engage the sear.
If that isn't the problem then look for debris or other blockage causing the same effect.

I got a pm from RadioTech who wanted to know what I did to fix my Contender frame.  I will post the reply so all will know what it was.

The striker sprng was broken.  It was very easy to replace, just drop out the trigger group and drive out the pin holding it in,  replace the spring, and put the trigger group back in.  I got 2 new springs from Thompson by calling them and they sent them to me for free.
