I'm still fairly new to the Contender, I just bought my third barrel, so I was wondering. Is it a most of the time thing for the screws that come with the base to be too long. I just bought a base today for my new barrel and this makes two out of three sets that will have to be shortened. I realize that it is easer to shorten than to lengthen the screws but I am just curious. Has it always been this way? Has Weaver started using longer screws? Or perhaps TC has started drilling the holes a little shallower to add a little more strength to the Contender barrel for a greater safety margin.

I've never had to shorten the screws.

You need to clean out the holes for the screws. They have a loctite type compound that has solidified under the iron sight screws. The holes should be plenty deep for the screws with the mount. The most I have ever seen having to be removed from a screw is maybe a turn and there could have been some goo in the bottom of that hole as well. I use a small pin or needle to break up the loctite and get it out of the threads.

I have had a lot of barrels over the years that I never had to shorten screws for. Lately I have had to shorten some. The mounts were Leupold.

I never have had to shorten screws.I agree with Radio I have seen a lot of loc tite in the holes.

I just bought a used barrel with the sights removed. I cleaned the holes and still couldn't get the screws tight enough. I just took a file and took about 1 turn of the screws off and then it worked great.

Some of the time the holes are drilled deep enough but they don't tap them clear to the bottom. I bought a bottom tap just for that purpose as I was having the same problem.

A gunsmith told me once that T/C went through a period where they could not drill their scope mount holes to a consisitent depth. Maybe they are still in that period!

I may have to go with Bullseye on his last statement on this one. On my last barrel I cleaned out the loctite and it still wouldn't tighten. (I clean out the mounting holes on any firearm) My new barrel is a Super 16 so the scope mounting holes are behind the rear site so no loctite at all although the rear hole did have some metal shavings I had to blow out. When I use only one screw at a time all screws tried in all holes wont tighten all the way. The second from the front seems to be a little shallower than the other three. I know the fix is simple and all holes, even the second one, look like they have enough threads to hold the mount. I am just the curious type sometimes. Thanks for all your replys so far.
