Cast Bullet Silhouette!!!!
« on: April 26, 2004, 03:15:42 PM »
This last Sunday I shot in my first cast bullet match.  The rules are any rifle any siight, cast bullets only.  The match is shot at 50,100,150, and 200m with full size and weight targets.  Holy cow!!!! :-D  What a blast!  I shot a Savage short action with a bull barrel chambered in 7mm-08.  My loads were a 170gr over 12.5gr of Unique.  I lost two rams that I hit just a bit low.  Otherwise the misses are my own mistakes.  I shot a 29/40 for a classing of AA.

If you have a chance to try a match like this go for it!!!!!  This rocks.

I've got a Remington 788 in .30-30 that would be just about unbeatable in this game. Maybe our club will give it a try.

It is a lot of fun and we have been offering this to rifle shooters at our Pistol matches to help populate the firing line.  The shooters follow the Pistol times of a 30 second load and 2 minute firing time but otherwise the format is very familiar.  I would suggest you look for IHMSA (go to www.ihmsa.org) or NRA long range matches for more locations to do this one if your local club doesn't offer it.  Its fun and plenty challanging.

There's been a similar movement here where we shoot cowboy silhouette along side regular IHMSA match.  Lately we've begun shooting cast bullet rifles (particularly of the milsurp variety).  Loads of fun and it generates some $$ for the range to support the activity.  Last match I saw probably 3 guys (that I've never seen before) bring their scoped lever guns to the match to shoot.  This definately has an appeal that has only been slightly tapped into.

Mil Surp rocks at this game.  The Iron sight winner was shooting an old Turkish Mauser 8mm.  He only added a peep sight and shot a 34.  Lots of old military stuff there.  30/40 Krag won last month.....fun dang game!

500 meter silhouette w/cast bullets

Taco,  A few years ago there were a few guys around who were shooting cast bullets at our nationals.    One fellow was from Arizona I think but can't recall his name.   Joe Manno from Ridgway use to shoot cast bullets at the nationals also.  Joe died a couple of years ago,  and I haven't seen the other guy for a few years either.    Might as well give the cast bullets a try.  You probably won't win the nationals anyway so you might as well have fun.  Can you imagine hitting a ram at 500 meters with cast bullets?   Once I shot a tuned M1 grand and was amazed to hit a couple of rams with iron sights.  Don Weathersbee

Last year I traded messages on the old Cast Bullet board on Shooters with a fellow who took a lever action .30-30 to the Nationals at Ridgeway and competed with cast bullets. He took two or three rams as I remember. I asked him his comeups from Chickens. Wish I could remember what he said. It was about 35 minutes, I think.

Nah.....Nats is not my bag o' tea.  I like shooting a whole bunch..   But to get to nats I would have to get serious as heck about it.  Right now I go to matches and have an incredibly fun time.

As a matter of course....there is a cast bullet match (same rules) on the long range course of fire on the 5th Saturday of the month.  I plan on shooting it next time around........if my scope has enough elevation!

Whatever the game you play...take a kid to the range and introduce them to our sport.  I've had a ball inviting a bunch of my students to mathes.   Lots o' fun :P
