First cast boolits from my 30-30
« on: April 26, 2004, 02:54:43 PM »
Finally got my 30-30 up and running again. Broke the firing pin on my 357 frame, put that barrel on the 30-30 frame, as I wasn't using the 30-30 barrel I took the scope and rail off it and put them on the 45-70 when I traded for it, finally got another scope and rail, mounted it up, loaded up some of the cast boolits that DJ sent me last year, used 33.6 grains of WC 846 (mil-surp) once I got it on the paper, the first 5 shot group was nearly perfectly arrowhead shaped being 2.5" long and 1.75" tall. Easily covered with the palm of my hand. Certainly not a bragging group, but it is better than ANY cast group I have fired with a middle of the road book load. Lyman manual suggests that this boolit should have been traveling circa 1900 fps.  Will chronograph some tomorrow if I can, may have to watch the grandkids.   While it is entirely possible that this is as good as it gets, I will certainly continue to put the boolit and the rifle to the test. (Still have to get a firing pin for the 357 frame.)

By the by,  Any sugggestions as to a boolit mold for a 30-30 Handi? Any favorites or overall best performers for you guys? Thanks, JP

I don't know about a mold but a good sourse of .30 cal. cast bullets is Midsouth Shooters Supply.  They sell cast bullets cheaper than I can make them myself if I count my time and if I have to buy lead.  Check them out they are on the web.

:D  Check Oregan trail/lazar cast / silver bullet  . They sell a 170 cast  made for a gas check. I install hornaday GCs and I have had excellent results in 30-30 and 308 with AA 5744. The dia. is .310, I use a Lyman M die to get them started.
Shoot straight , shoot often.

So far, my wife's Handi has done well with most of the cast designs we have tried.  In a purchased bullet, Gardeners Cache', www.gardenerscache.com, makes a 155 grain that he will size to .311 that works very well for her.  If you cast your own, almost any of the .30 designs work well, if they cast large enough to size to .310 or .311.  Favorites here are Lyman 311413, Lee C309180, and Lyman 311041.  For a hunting bullet, the Gardeners Cache or 311041 would be the thing.

We find that the Handi does not shoot well with bullets sized under .309, or over .311.  Others have different experiences.
