Making headway with the Max
« on: April 26, 2004, 10:40:43 PM »
I have heard somewhere that the slower ball powders like H110/W296/WC680 want magnum primers so I loaded up some this weekend with great results.  My groups shrank by half in most cases and to a third with one load.  It's still not shooting like I want but it is grouping instead of patterning now.  The same 75-120fps extreme spreads are still there but accuracy fell right in.  I have a bore lap kit from LBT on the way, maybe that will help the situation further.

It was CCI's Small Rifle Magnum primer (CCI-450?), WC680, and a 212gr boolit out of a Lyman mold that DJ sent me to play with.   The primers didn't help Hornady's 180gr Interlock tho, they still throw buckshot-like patterns.  I am going to load up some other boolits that Bob gave me for comparison and see if it does the same thing with them.

So far, I've not had great luck with that boolit from my Max, What kind of groups are you getting with jacketed bullets? Have you shot any of the XTP's, the Renington 200 Core-Loct RN or the Hornady 180 SSP????

I've not shot much in the way of jacketed out of it, the 180gr Interlocks I mentioned are the SSPs.. my rifle doesn't seem to like them at all.  I've got some of the 145gr silvertips loaded up with magnum primers to see if they help those at all.  They didn't shoot well either using normal primers (CCI).  Seems like Bob gave me a few 200gr Speer and Remington jacketed to try early on and as I recall they didn't shoot well either.  That might have been before I scoped it, I can't recall to tell ya the truth.  I haven't tried any XTPs at all.

He aint no hooty owl thats just when he gets up so he can use the net free, Myself tho I just got off work not that I was doing anything but I was there all night. As for my Max it'll shoot just about anything well enuff to drop a white tail but is showing a prefrence for heavy flat nose boolits cruzin bout 1700fps+ most of the time I get groups around half of Haywires but then I'm a better shot than he is, so if I ever learn how to shoot well I should be able to cut my groups in half. This thing seems to like H4227 to, H110 works also still need to try the W680 but they still don't make enuff hours in one day for all this fun. One odd round it will shoot well is some 158gr SWC GCs I cast from a LEE mould I had three rounds touching with one high right and one low left that I know I pulled off opened the group up to 1.5" sloppy shooting or it would have been 3/4" or less. fun fun later. 8)

Shot 3 5-shot groups this weekend with magnum primers, W296 and the 145gr Winchester Silvertips that wouldn't group with normal primers and got a 2" group at 50yds.  With my rifle at least, the primer change has been the key.  I haven't loaded up the ones that Bob gave me yet, that will have to wait for another day.
