Author Topic: Hevishot results w/ 870 (Read 715 times)

Took some time yesterday to try out the Remington Hevishot 1 5/8oz #6's. Compared to my Winchester Supreme XX 2oz. #6's they shoot pretty much the same. The main difference is much less recoil and they both pattern the same. I don't think those 2 factors justify triple the price though. I'm sure the Hevishot have more energy but it wasn't noticeable during the shooting. I was shooting into a 1/2" piece of plywood supported on the ground. Both rounds knocked over the board out to 35 yards. At 40 yards the target didn't fall over. I also used a stock-type screw in choke (Trap Full) just for comparison. Boy, what a difference a turkey choke makes! I couldn't kill a turkey past 20 yards with a stock choke! I'll post pictures next week when I can.

Using 3" loads out of my 870 I feel comfortable out to around 35-40 yards. I was getting 6 pellets in the neck vertebrae/brain with each shot out to that range. Using a Remington Super Turkey Full choke. Might be better with different choke but not very easy to try other chokes.

I have to agree with you about the price !!@#$%^&***!! Would have to take out a second mortgage almost LOL!

I use a Mossberg® Mdl 500 20GA with a Hastings® Extended Full Turkey Choke (.570) and it is absolutely AWESOME. Using Federal Premium® 1&5/16 Copper Plated #6 I get 61 PELLETS IN THE KILL ZONE @ 30yds. :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: I realize using a 20Ga and a lighter payload my range is limited but My God inside 30yds I'll turn his head into jelly :oops: ! The next best is the same ammo using #5; with that I get 25 pellets in the kill zone. #4's of any brand don't pattern worth S@#$%^&*T.

It gets expensive initially but once you find what works you are locked in.

I'm going to the Klickitat opening weekend to try for a Merriam. After that I'll hunt the Skookumchuck valley for an Eastern. Finally to the Blue Mountains to try for a Rio Grande.

Thanks David. Good info. I'm thinking of trying one of those Hasting chokes but don't want to spend the money. I'm already getting a killing pattern out to 35 yards and not sure the cost to stretch that 5-10 yards will be worth the cost. 35 yards is a pretty long shot anyway so I might just live with that range. It's worked so far. The only reason I toy with the idea is I had a chance at a bird 2 years ago that hung up about 35-40 yards out and then he left without offering a closer shot. I guess that one haunts me a little but I also guess that it could have been 50+ yards and I'd still be stewing about it.

They are in Pasco; only paid $24.95 as I recall. Considering that the X-Full Tube from Mossberg® (.585) was about $20 and the Hastings® was (.015) tighter it was a no-brainer.

I'll be 54 in a few weeks and while I'm in overall good health I don't have the tolerance for recoil I did 30 years ago. The 20GA kills everything I shoot just as dead. Practice is the key but also the 6lb 20GA is a lot easier to tote than the 8lb 12GA.

If I win the Lotto I'll get a 10GA but I'll hire a guy to tote it for me! :mrgreen:

Hi Power have you tryed the Win high Vel shell they are the black ones they have a diff wadding than the other and they pattern GREAT out of of all 3 of my guns look on ebay for a comp-N-choke they are a good choke better than a hastsing choke or look up there web site i have one for one of my benelli's that i used it some to crow hunt with to kill the high flyers it is a good choke But i had a custom turkey choke for it now the comp-n-choke is a good choke for the money my wife has a comp-N-choke in her BPS 20ga 3 inch mag youth model 22 inch barrel at 40 yrds i pattern it and for a 20ga it is a shooter you should see the pattern using 6's last yr i killed a 3 yr old bird with her 20ga at 39 yrds stone dead VM

I'm using the Winchester Supreme XX loads but they are red. Maybe they have a new version this year. With all the good results I"ve had with Win. turkey shells the last few years I will try some of the High Vel. shells. I'll look for one of those chokes too. Thanks.

Hi my buddy talk me in to trying some Hevi Shot my wife got me a box last yr so i called the guy up that made my custom choke and he said try the .650 choke and i did at 40 yrds i put 15 pellets in the brain and vertebrae that was a Hevi Shot 6's 1 5/8 oz load shooting out of a Benelli Super 90 12ga with 21 inch barrel i like the Hevi Shot But Not the price of it VM
