I tend to agree with Kyode and Knight. I was pondering the same thought awhile back. The loading manuals don't show a significant increase between the two out a 15". The AI will gain some but, how much ??? I went the middle, with a 30-40 AI, mostly cuz I like rims, when possible.
don't ya hate all them options :?      :-D

I have the 30-06 JDJ, which has more case capacity than the 30-06 AI.

My barrel started out as a 308 Win. (I had SSK rechamber it)

As a 308 Win, my barrel would do the following:

150's at 2580 fps
165/168's at just under 2500 fps
180's at 2422 fps (Remington factory ammo - the only 180's I ever shot thru it as a 308)

As a 30-06 JDJ, the same barrel has chrono'd the following:
150's @ 2915 fps
165/168's @ just over 2700 fps  (the load I hunt with chrono'd at 2713 fps)
180's @ 2550 fps (I stopped here 'cause of recoil)

My barrel is a 15" blued barrel with out a muzzle break.

Hope this helps with your decision.

I might add that my barrel was a consistant 3/4" grouper prior to rechambering.  After rechambering, it is just as accurate (maybe more so...). I didn't loose any accuracy and gained a bit in the velocity department.

Regards,

Rog
