Darned if I have not backed into this Game??
« on: May 04, 2004, 05:05:25 PM »
Just joined the local gun club. Was lookig for a place to work on and test my rifles. Have long wanted to get into Benchrest.
But would have to travel halfway across the state to participate.

Well now just 4 miles from my house is a range where Handgun Shiloette is shot twice a month. I really know nothing about this game, but it makes more sense to channel my limited funds into this instead.

So tell me where to start.  Think I would like to start with a 357, and thats all I know.

Welcome aboard.  Not knowing what they shoot at the range you are refering to it is hard to say where to start.  If they are shooting bigbore the 357 will work using heavier bullets (180's & up).  You did not say if it was a revolver, contender or what you were shooting.  If they are shooting field pistol they the 357 would also work well with just any bullet weight.  My suggestion would be to attend a match or two to see what they are shooting.  There are many classes in which to shoot, Unlimited, Production, Revolver, Standing just to name a few.  There is something for everybody.  This is a great sport with great people.  I know if you came to my range if you wanted to try it out I would offer you my guns to shoot.  Most other I have run across would do the same.  Here is a site with lots of other information about IHMSA http://www.aimoo.com/forum/freeboard.cfm?id=388847
and
http://www.ihmsa.org/

Hope this helps
Bret

Welcome to Silhoette!  I think the 357 is an excellent choice, good for both Big Bore and Field Pistol (short course centerfire though some attempt it with a .22rf)

You will no doubt hear that the 357 is inadequate for Big bore Rams which is not right at most ranges.  The Rams will fall to a 357 if they are set properly and they do not have a wind blowing in from behind them.

The fastest way to learn the game is to practice on the Chickens and Pigs and simply have good sight settings for the Turkeys and Rams.  When you first get going you will miss a fair amount of the Turkeys and Rams and don't worry over that much.  You can make AA pretty fast by working just the closer animals and working on your shooting position and or Stance.

Good luck, have fun and stay way away from the politics.  One of the saviors of Silhouette lives in Iowa so you are in good company :D

This Club is NRA and they have range out to 200 meters.
Not logical to expect to start at the top?
So I intend  to start in Field Class, (Think that Hunter is NRA comparable class).

Will go with a revolver(have none at this time) but really like single action.
So will probably go with a Ruger Blackhawk(have small hands and single actions seem to fit better) unless I find a good deal on something else.

Will attend a couple matches before I do anything(have to sell my canoe to finance a handgun).

I suspect there are IHMSA matches in the area, but will have to research some. Once I get up and running I may shoot both groups.

Hi Jim,

The range in Colfax shoots IHMSA matches also.  The next match is May 16.  They shoot Big Bore, Small Bore & Field Pistol.  The match director there is Bud Walvatne, and he is very accomodating.

Good luck & welcome to the club!

Met Bud, last Sunday(though he did not give me his last name) I have his phone number. He gave me a tour of the range, the complete safety speil and introduced me to some of the guys.
Unfortunately that match got rained out(things were breaking up when I got there about 1pm), so did not get to see much of how they run.
I will be out there for sure May 16,.
