Boggy does it again
« on: March 22, 2004, 09:52:14 AM »
Tom,

I sure wish you would make beavering look easy.  I just don't get it man how on earth would a beaver swim between two logs  with castor at the back of the two logs.

Looks WAY to easy for my canine mind.  Someday I will total figure it out but till then I will be happy with my catch as it is.

Interesting Beaver Problem
« Reply #3 on: March 27, 2004, 08:30:40 AM »
I am down to a problem causing beaver in a spot where it builds a dam in front of bridge flooding peoples back yards.  I can get rid of it, and it builds in back in about 2 days thus causing problem again.  I have trapped 4 others out of here.  Now for some time I couldn't find his residence, I had a snare over all 13 dens I could find and none held him.  Finally I happened to see the culprit 2 days ago he saw me and headed for a hole, I missed the pot shot I took at it   .  I ran over there and looked at hole, very interesting indeed.  There is a den at water level, and then directly at top of hole is a slide about 4 ft in length to another hole in bank, this slide was soaked, and hole was soaked going down into the ground, massive den inside, it looked like.  I put a snare in the lil channel about half a foot from the bottom den entrance, and it can't get into either den without going through it.  Now here is the problem.  On both checks the beaver came down the top slide to about a foot from water, saw the snare I assume, and turned around and went back into the top den entrance.  Yesterday I put a 330 over the top hole and left snare in place and nothing yet.  Any suggestions?

You are going to have to make some blind sets with foot holds or dive under sets AWAY from the dens and wait and be patient...   Do you have experience with footholds for bvr????  Some dive under sets with conis or snares will work just fine  but you have to change your tactics.  when using footholds, you have to use BIG enough ones and  make trap bed in bottom of creek bottom to have yr trap level with creek bottom and firm not loose to nail that trap shy bvr...

I have very little experience with footholds, only used em once and caught my first beaver.  I had tried castormounds, snares on slides, they so far turn away from 330s also.  No channels, just a big pond/creek.

Don't Worry OC I wasn't trying to catch them in a 110's.  I am big Kid now and can set the 330's :-)
