Tell about your FG 41 Mag
« on: April 12, 2004, 01:49:56 PM »
I waited last year until they finally came out.  Looked at 3 of them and with the quality of those 3 I would not turn loose of my money.  There was also some negative talk on the Marlin Forums.  I was in a gun store today and saw another one that sparked my interest again, however I did not actually handle the gun (that keeps me from doing something in a rush).

Now that they have been out a year, what kind of luck is everyone having with them.  Any feeding problems?  How is accuracy?  Any other comments either positive or negative.

Thanks!

Bullseye;

Bought mine last summer and have enjoyed it ever since.
Tried the 210gr. Federals and they grouped good, then for the heck of it I tried some 170gr. Sierra's with H-110, an old stand by handload that I had used for years out of my S&W Model 57, had ten of them, when I shot them I could not believe it , man this rifle can shoot. Well I went home and loaded up some more of the same load. Went back the next day and started shooting at 100 yds. It  pput 10 shots under 5.5 inches and that was with the factory iron sights. Could not believe it. Hav'nt shot any other load in it but that one. I'm tempted to mount a scope on it, but I like the way it handles with out one. Feeding is fine and the walnut wood is BEAUTIFUL. I'm well pleased with mine. Also my last 2 numbers on the serial # is 94! Hope this helps.
Dennis

Good caliber choice for a lever gun

I cannot think of a better caliber choice for a lever action than the .41 mag. The more you shoot these guns the better they perform. The only ammo that did not feed well was the Remington 170gr jhp. The FG likes the more rounded bullets.  The reloads that I have made up, feed as smooth as silk in my FG. They recommend that the gun not be canted at all when chambering the rounds as "MR. Gravity" can influence the feeding.
  My Fg likes 210gr Hornady XTP over 19.5 grs of W296.

Well as I said before I  had looked at two of these before and would not buy them.  The stocks were almost black, forend and buttstock did not really match, excessive tool marks in the action and a very rough action.

I went back and looked at the latest one I found that prompted this post a few weeks ago.  It had very nice wood, no tool marks and the action was smooth.  Trigger was heavy but no creep.  It is many steps above the other two I looked at.

Guess what?  It is now sitting in my safe.  I did not really need it since I have a 44 Trapper, but I love the 41 and this one was a nice one.

Nice going, Bullseye!  "Needing" one is a poor excuse for buying a gun, we can all do better than that!   :wink:

I have been a fan of the .41 since I got my first in 1985, and I'm currently shopping around for another.  Maybe I "need" another Marlin.......... :grin:
