I have a Win M94 Pre64 that I need to know the proper method to scrub the bore out. I know how to clean a bolt action, but not a lever action.I took a few strokes straight down the bore, and didn't notice any major problems, but I need to know the proper method as I don't want to ruin a fine rifle like this.

Spress: it's no different than cleaning a bolt rifle's bore. The factory does not recommend disassembly to clean your Modle 94. I would scrub the bore the same way you scrub the bore on a bolt rifle.

Open the action so your cleaning rod has full access to the chamber area and clean away - you should not have any problems at all. When you have finished, put a drop of oil on each side of the bolt and the factory says you are ready to go. I will either use a bore guide to help prevent crown damage when I clean mine or failing that, a couple of turns of duct or masking tape at the cleaning rod end just so the metal end of my rods don't impact against the crown and you should be in good shape. I use a "Bore Snake" on my levers. No worry about a rod wearing the muzzle, and no crude spraying into the action.

Pick up an Otis Kit with the flex cables. They are designed for lever and pump guns because you always PULL the cable through from the chamber to the muzzle. Do't have to worry about muzzle damage or getting crud in the action either.

the otis kit and the bore snake have rendered cleaning rods obsolete in my opinion. I have them both and couldnt be happier with them.

The '94 isn't that difficult to tear down, although it may be the first time you try it. After doing it a couple of times, it's a piece of cake. I'm not suggesting you tear it down every time you clean the gun, but I usually take mine down once a year or so, and get the crud out. There are plenty of these guns out there that have never been apart, and work just as well as the day they were assembled. Depends on the conditions you use the gun under.
