Howdy folks,

Just returned from a floatplane drop-off on Prince of Wales Island with my son.  Had a great time, saw a few bear, took one of them, but best of all, created memories that will last a lifetime.  This year I did not get a license or even take a rifle, only a handgun.

Used a predator call to call in a nice bear that my son took on our first huntable evening.  Took it with a single shot from a 270 loaded with 140 gr Accubonds at about 100 yds.  Amazingly, it fell within 5 yards of where I took mine last year.  Got it all on video.  Granted, not exactly the best video with trying to use a call and shoot video at the same time.

One of the unique things about it afterwards was that by the time we moved the bear into position for pics and video we decided it was too late to start skinning.  We covered it with a tarp and my son put large rocks on the corners.  On our return early in the morning there was an eight foot branch lying perfectly across the top of the tarp, grass was thrown on it, and the tarp was pulled back exposing the head.  A bear had investigated overnight and tried burying it.

After skinning and hauling out all the meat we returned for the hide and skull.  We found the carcass was now moved 50 yards.  A good bear came out of the woods about 100 yards away and walked within 20 yards of the carcass, seemingly oblivious to it.  We sneaked off to the side hoping to get some interesting video but it just walked by.  Two days later we couldn’t find the carcass.

Currently it scores 20 10/16, hangs just over 7 feet from nose to base of tail, and squares 6’10”.  Check out the pics including the tarp and a deer that I assume was attacked by a wolf some time ago and survived.
