Brown Bear Mauls Guide....
« on: May 09, 2004, 01:05:10 PM »
Posted this over on the Big Bore forum but here it is for those that don’t go there.

Talked to my brother in-law last night and he told me about a guide that got mauled by a Brown Bear toward the end of last month.  Here is a link to the story.

http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/042804/loc_brownbear.shtml

Question is, was the guide getting mauled due to him using a Push Feed instead of a Control Round Feed?  The guide(Scott D. Newman) was using a custom Sako in .416 Remington Magnum and it jammed when he short stroked the rifle when the bear charged.  I admire a man that has the guts to follow a wounded Brown Bear into the brush of Alaska by himself.  I know it’s the job of the guide to take care of any problem(a wounded Brown Bear classifies as a PROBLEM BIG TIME) that comes up but I think he should have waited till the next morning instead of going in alone.  Opinions??  Small groups and tight lines to all.  And to all Mother out there, HAPPY
MOTHER’S DAY

Seems pretty obvious that he shouldn't have gone in after the wounded bear alone.
What if he was critically wounded and couldn't get to his radio to summon aid? :?

Not much pride in being a DEAD, brave guy.

Just my 2 cents - VH

My heart go's out to Scott Newman and hope he makes it ok. Thats the sad facts of guiding, You never know how much your hunter knows about his ability to shoot or act in a situation like this. There are plenty of people that can sit at a shooting table and put their shoots in a tite group, but in situation such as running into a bear head on some times brings out the rabbit in them. In 1965 we had run this black bear up a hill to a bluff and the bear started back down the hill and my hunter got scared and threw
his rifle at the bear and the bear ran rite past him, So you never know what people will do in a panic situation, Did'nt mean to get on a tangent.
I do hope Scott comes out of it OK.......Joe............
