Real Colt

bkklicker:  I believe you can web to the Colt website and find out from there but what would make you think your Colt isn't the real thing, or a real Colt?????  If it says Colt and has a bunch of Colt symbols, like the Rampant Colt on the grips, or a production name stamp and caliber on the slide it should be a Colt.  Mikey.

There are several books which list the range of serial numbers which were assigned to the various manufacturers.  I have a couple of them and would look up the serial number for you.  Just put X's for the last three digits.
