Can't stop messing with the sportster.....
« on: May 17, 2004, 08:55:56 AM »
Well, since squirrel season has been over for some time now and my ruger 223 has been shooting good on the coyotes I haven't used my sportster 22 mag for some time.  The first time it was fired for months was when I shot the postal card to mail in.  So, Saturday night I looked through all my spare stuff and pulled out the millet reddot I wasn't using anymore (had it on my 223 before mounting williams peep).  I then started digging through my extra rings and found a pair of Weaver "low" rings.  Since the scope was only 1/4" longer than the scope rail it couldn't interfer with the hammer.  The scope is very low with the scope adjustment housing is maybe 1/8" above the scope rail.  I then removed the hammer spur since it was no longer needed.  The rifle, reddot, and harris br bipod weigh in at around 6lbs and very steady (without bipod I couldn't hold steady offhand).  And the eye alignment is perfect.  I place my cheek on the stock with my eyes closed, open my eyes, perfect, looking right down the middle of the scope.  And it should be quick with the ability to have both eyes open.  The unobstructed hammer and quick target aquisition from the reddot have turned this into a very different feeling rifle.  I can't wait to take it to the woods and call some coyotes.

Sunday I sighted it in at 20 yards (in a hurry, windy, etc) so this week sometime I hope to finish the sightin job.  I think it's going to be a fun little varmint rifle around the place, and a good small game setup.  I'll also use it for night coyote hunts and calling coyotes from a deer stand and on farms with lots of livestock.

One of these days I'll get to posting pictures and post a pic.  It's different looking with the small 1" tube reddot slammed low on the scope rail, short stubby bipod, it's a squirrel's worst nightmare!
