Smith & Wesson does  make a 41 mag in 8-3/8.

I purchased this gun one week ago today.  It is a Performance Center 657, and comes with two front sight blades, two grips, scope base and PC case.  Mine is serial number 11 and was purchased on gunbroker.com.

It is a sweet shooter and will be my primary deer hunting wheelgun for many years to come.

I love the 41 and Smith and Wesson products.

I will be selling my Taurus Raging Bull in 41 mag (6-1/2 inch barrel), as I do not like the additional noise due to the porting.  But it is a sweet shooter also.

Good luck!

fred722,

I found another smith 657 on Gunbroker.com, this one is serial #9.

This is the same seller that I purchased mine from,  good transaction as far as I was concerned.

This is a little more than my two digit serial number.

One other option is to buy a .41RemMag Ruger then send it to someone like Clements or Reeder Custom Guns to have it rebarreled

Slavage,

It is like new in box.  Only 100 or less rounds thru it.  Purchased last November, will sell it for $450.  It goes to the gun show with me this weekend.

Crawfish,

I know what you mean I just got back from gun range for my second outing.  It likes Berry EP Flat point, in 210 grain over 8.4 gr W-231.  This is a good target load.  I plan to try Unique also for target.

Hunting bullet will be 265 gr lead flat point with a gas check.  I need to develope the powder and load for it.

Changed the grips to the Hogue today and it handles recoil like a dream.

Do you have a scope on yours?

I shot some 265 Keith GC bullets through my Ruger Hunter this past weekend.  I did not have a good place to start as far as load data but had seen an article from Paco Kelly a while back in which he was using a 270 Keith over 21 grains of H110 as a favorite load.  So I backed off to 20 to see what it looked like.  With 20 grains, a winchester LP primer and starline cases, the average velocity was 1515.  Seems a little fast.  Primers were about usual and the cases fell out of the cylinder when I turned it up and rotated the cylinder.  I know these are not good pressure indicators in revolvers but none the less, I did note them.  I was expecting mid 1300 with the velocity.  Recoil and blast were not bad at all.  Does this seem a bit high to everyone?  I'm probably going to back it down some more, around 18.5 and see what I get with it now that I have a place to start.  Think I messed up with this one and started a little on the high end.  This is my first 41 magnum so I really didn't know what to expect.  Regardless, this load, when backed off, should be a deer killing machine.  GS

When you start working loads don’t forget 2400. Been shooting .41s’ almost exclusively since 1989. Think I’ve tried just about every thing out there that is even remotely suggested for use in the .41. I keep coming back to 2400. I always found that 2400 produces a different kind of recoil than the other powders I use. From the summer of 2000 until October 2001 while I couldn’t shoot anything I did lots of ballistic research. One of the most interesting things I found was work that was done on the power curve of various powders during their burn. 99.9% ignite, peak, then fall off. 2400 doesn’t do that. It ignites, peaks, flattens out, then drops off. I think it is that flattening out that for me makes it so pleasant to shoot.
I have two hunting loads that have worked in all my .41s’. A Sierra 210 Power Point/19.5g 2400. I used that load for years, killed a ton of deer with it. I use mostly now 17.5g 2400 with a CBPT 250GC in .41RemMag. That bullet has shot completely through the shoulders of everything I have used it on. Just about anything will shoot through a deer but I have used that bullet to kill 5 large cattle, a 600+lb cow bison, a 1800+lb Angus bull that had broken its’ leg and three feral cattle 1200+lb, 1400+lb and a monster steer of over 2100+lbs. Four were shot front shoulder at 66 yards or less with complete pass through. The big steer was shot square in the middle of it’s nose with the bullet exiting out the back of the skull just behind the horns. That one was shot at about 8 yards. The bison and the steer were shot with a .41GNR#2 the other three with a plain Jane .41RemMag. So don’t overlook 2400 when you start load development for the 265g bullet.

Crawfish,

Thanks for the testimonial on 2400, I value your opinion.

I use 2400 on my 44's but have not tried it much on the 41's, It will be on the top of my list.
