First time colt owner,sighting question.
« on: May 16, 2004, 05:51:51 PM »
What is  normal for a colt 45 defender or should I say what is expected of a colt defender at say 30 or 40 feet with 230gr.round nose ammo. I am hitting about 3''in low. I have a S&W 329 44MAG. and it shoots dead on, I also have a KAHR-k 40 that is about 1 IN high. what is about right for the colt.

forkthem2002:  any defensive handgun, be it pistol or revolver with fixed sights should shoot to point of aim at 25 yds.  If it shoots an inch or two high at 25 yds then the sights are probably regulated for 50 yds, as with the Gov't Model 45.

I'm not familiar with the Defender but it sounds like your front sight is too tall.  However, before I would do anything to correct the point of impact I would try the piece with different loads.  Possibly something a bit lighter, say 200 gn, might bring the point of impact up to point of aim but possibly not.  Maybe it just needs to 'settle in', or 'break in'.   If not, contact Colt for their advice or take it to a good gunsmith to have that problem corrected.  HTH.  Mikey.

forkthem2002:  just read another post about the defender one post down--forum and the owner has the same problem you do - his also hits low and I think he is shooting the same sort of load - a 230 gr.  Hmmmm, now this is getting interesting.  I think if we follow those posts we might get an answer for you.  HTH.  Mikey.

30 or 40 feet, that is about 10 yards. Where does it hit at 25 yards?
