416 rem. A joy to shoot
« on: May 21, 2004, 08:27:19 AM »
I loaded up some fodder for my 1917-416 rem and went to the range to try her out and was pleased with the results. after bore sighting it i was 1/2 inch to the right. Useing 400gr. rem sp. I shot three for a 1 inch group.
which i thought was ok. I then tried three 350 gr. barns x and had a group
of 2-1/4 may have to work up a better load for them. The old gun performed like a champ. I'm tickeled to have found her..........Joe............

Joe,

A quick hint that may help with the Barnes 350 gr. jobs.  I had the same problem with my .416 Rigby using them and had to play around with the seating depth to get them to groups well.  Try moving them  out a bit as that is what it took for me.  Small groups(hopefully) and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Lawdog,
Thanks for the advice, I think i was pushing them a little hard,Gonna cut back a little then play with the lenth and work my way up to where they should be. I was lucky on the 400 grainers got them pretty well in there the first try, I started the 350s with 87grs of RL 15. I may try some different powder the next time. Thanks again.........Joe.............................

Joe,

Another tip.  Whatever else you do try the Barnes 400 gr. XLC bullets.  I get a little extra velocity with them over regulator copper jacketed 400 gr. bullets.  Even over the Barnes 400 gr. X bullet.  The 400 gr. XLC is now one of my standard loads for my Rigby.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Barnes actually recommends starting about 0.050" off the lands.  It may be bit farther or closer, depending on the rifle for top accuracy, but it will be close to that.

I don't know if they are availble in .416 caliber yet, but try the new Barnes TSX (triple shock bullet).  I understand that they are more accurate than the older X Bullet (of which I shoot a lot).

That 350 gr. TSX should be a wicked load out of a .416 Rigby for most everything that walks in North America.  The 400 gr. would handle the Big Bears and the African dangerous stuff.  I was hopping for a 300 gr. .416 TSX but maybe that will come later.  Small groups and tight lines to all.  Lawdog
