Custom Mini-14
« on: March 26, 2004, 05:27:36 PM »
I remember back in the late '70's, an article in Guns and Ammo magazine about a gunsmith (or gunshop) that would take Mini-14's and customize them by: polishing and blueing metal parts with a nice finish, removed front sight and replaced with a different sight (was cosmetic only as there wasn't a rear sight), and then fitted a full-length Mannlicher-style stock - nicely finished walnut.  I can't remember what, or even if, they did anything with the trigger, but I can't believe they left the stock trigger.  It was topped with a custom scope mount, and according to the article, it was very accurate.  It made a very attractive outfit IMO.  Do any of you remember these custom mini-14's, and do any of you know if this is still available, and where?  Thanks.

Some outfit in texas, don't remember name, but they advertise, replaces barrel, trigger rebeds etc. and makes it into a 1 inch gun. Unfortunately all of this costs a mint and you also have a long heavy barrel. Never could understand why Ruger diddn't correct the accuracy problem. Tthose I have shot couldn't hold a 55 gal drum at 100 yds. Great concept, sturdy reliable gun, but lousy accuracy.

Clark Custom in Louisiana does an accurizing job on a Mini-14. I seem to recall a stabilizer that is fitted to the end of the gas system under the barrel, and it is supposed to tighten up groups noticeably.

Go to Accuracy Systems Inc. at http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/ruger_mini_prices.html and check out what they have to offer.  Good people that seem to love their work.  My Mini shoots under MOA all day long after the work they did on it.  Lawdog

I checked out that website on Accuracy Systems, and all I can say is you gotta REALLY want a Ruger to pay that much to get one to shoot straight.

I love Rugers, but I think I'll go "cheap" and get an Armalite and not have to spend as much.

Old Griz,

I picked the Mini-14 as a duty weapon.  There are some very good reason why I didn't want a AR-15 or any of the clones.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

:cb2: If they are built like other Rugers, then they are very mechanically sound firarms, built far stronger and better than they need to be. I was just amazed at the cost of a new barrel. A $500-550 gun and $400-500 for a new barrel. Or the custom guns going all the way to $1700+. Sorry, but this just kinda caught me by surprise. I'll be OK by morning.

the clark barrell stabalizer does work. It brought mine from a safe queen to something i look forward to shooting. My gun went from about 5'' to about a 1'' I do have an accasional flier due to bad trigger. That will be fixed next. I highly recommend the stabalizer for accuracy, and its very easy to install
