Picked up my new 744 today.

Had to drive 7 hours round trip to get it but well worth the effort. It is a stainless model with the 6" heavy vent barrel. Boy does this baby shoot. This is my first .44, and the biggest handgun I've owned. My previous was a Colt 1911 .45acp. I shot my best ever group at 25 yds today. It was about 3", but 3 of the 5 cut the same hole, with full power 240's.  Not bad for a mediocre pistolerro. My usual standard of accuracy with a handgun is; can I hit a grouse at 25 paces. I would have killed a lot of birds today :grin: Any one suggest a good book on proper handgun technique? I would like to get good enough to hunt elk with it. I had decided to buy an S&W 629 this weekend until I spent an evening reading comments on this forum. A quick check with Garrett ammo about this gun and their +P 330 gr load confirmed that this is the gun I wanted. I find that this gun handles recoil much better, and I am more accurate with it, than my bosses 6" S&W 29 which I test fired a box of full house 240's through. I've owned a couple of Colts, Rugers, S&W, and a few cheapies over the years, but at first impression, this is best centerfire I've had.

I have bad news for you.  You have been ruined.  You will never be quite satisfied with any other revolver now.  You are probably a Dan Wesson guy for life now.  Welcome to the club.  I have been a member for about 20 years now.  Of course if you are going to get hooked on a gun, "the best" is not a bad gun to get hooked on.

I think I'm hooked alright. I shot it again yesterday, and I only like this thing more. The only other handgun I ever shot this well with was an old .22 Colt Matchtarget, and in a lapse of good judgement (sanity?) I sold it several years ago. I still regret that. I usually make it a point to hold on to the truly good shooters and this one definitely fits. When I was younger and shot the Matchtarget weekly I got pretty deadly on pop cans out to around 75 yards. I'm "aiming" to get there again this summer with this one, if these 40-something eyes are still up to the task.

I am sure you will enjoy that gun for a long time. I now have my fathers 744 with an 8 in. bbl., it too is a "shooter".
I hope to use it for a hunt or two in the future.

I just put a Hogue goncalo alves finger groove grip on mine. I'll have to get a pic posted. I'm thinking I may just have to hunt elk with it this year. I loaded up some 320 gr hard cast's and it shoots them well too.

                                                                                                 Mr. Cobrad, as a new member to this forum, I had to respond with my congratulations.  I bought my DW 744 10"VH in 1982 and added a six inch barrel as an alternate carry.  I won't pretend to be an expert, but with my long experience, I've found the DW wood target grip sometimes offers better treatment to bare hands from heavy recoil and short barrels 6 in. or less.  For what it is worth, my experience with heavy bullets suggests a comprimise for powder in handloads and limits your range.
