crimp?
« on: May 31, 2004, 06:20:44 AM »
question for you all! i'am shooting  lee 170 fp over 20 gr. of reloader7. every thing is working to plan, but i'am getting 2.5 to 3" groups @ 100yd.
i thing this load can do better.
anyhow do you think factory crimp will help with wheel weights & tin cast bullets, or will it damage my sized & lobbed bullets

thanks[/i]
if its worth doing, finish it!

2.5 - 3" ain't bad.  Don't know if you're using iron sights or a scope, but it seems that you've got something going on in the good department.  Why not crimp some and see?  The beauty of casting is that for a little sweat you can get "free" bullets.  Some folks swear by the Lee factory crimp, others cringe at the thought as that it can destroy the integrity of a jacketed bullet.  In this case, there's no jacket bonded to lead to worry about.  Let us know how it works out.

Charlie,

If you are shooting that .30-30 out of a levera ction carbine with iron sights, 2.5-3 inch groups at 100 yards is not bad at all!

Crimping may or may not hurt your groups.  It will not hurt the bullet if you crimp the case mouth into the crimping groove provided.

while waiting for replies, i went ahead and did load 10 with taper crimp & 10 with factory crimp. they all had 20.3 gr. of reloader 7 fed. lr primers. i dint notice much difference. the taper crimp edged out in group size dept.
i did notice that there seemed to be more pressure producded with factory crimp, and a slighty sharper report. again no leading & easy cleanup.
these were shot with iron factory sights, but i have filed down that fat bead in front to about .030 wide blade'

as aways thanks for the help, the info is working and i'am having lots of fun with this cast bullet thing!
