MAX Barrel Length for a handgun?
« on: June 01, 2004, 09:21:05 AM »
Exactly what is the max length for a contender barrel to be still considered a handgun?  And what is the Minimum length of a Carbine (rifle) barrel?  Thanks, Mike.

There is no maximum legal length for a pistol barrel.  The minimum legal barrel length for a rifle (i.e. for something with a butt stock) is 16".

Thanks Ron

That means that the contender barrels that are 16.25" long can be shot either with a handgun grip or rifle buttstock.

The current TCA barrel offering is a 16.25" 17 M2.  This is the reason I asked.

There are a couple of people on the T/C Rifle page that have been using their Katahdin bbls with pistol grips.  They say its much easier to tame the recoil of the big rounds out of the 18" bbls rather than punishing their shoulders.

Some states have a max barrel length listed for handguns for hunting.
Here's the NY definition:

Handgun—is any pistol or revolver intended to be aimed and fired with one hand, and having a barrel length not exceeding 16 inches.
