Baby wipes
« on: May 19, 2004, 04:07:57 AM »
I was looking through an old Muzzleloader magazine a few days ago and read where a person wrote in about the virtues of using baby wipes when swabbing between shots.  I am not a tween shot wiper, don't need to, but for those who are, you cut these baby wipes into squares and put them into a sealable container.  Use when necessary.  The writer said that the wipes contain mild cleaning agents gentle enough for a baby's bottom - so they shouldn't hurt your rifle.

Yup.  Been using them a bunch when shooting c&b revolvers.  Great for getting all that black gunk and lead residue off the hands after loading and before eating or smoking.  Also very refreshing when used to wipe your face and neck on a hot one.  Gonna try that swabbing patch idea when I shoot my flinters.  :-)

Btw, been using them since we had our 4yr. old.  Buy'em by the case from Costco.  One case will last quite a while.

:-D Shorty! I usually use my shirt to keep my hands and face clean. I have even cut pieces out for patches. I used to use old cloth diapers for all my gun needs, untill I ran out. I guess I'll just NEVER understand this modern metrosexual world we live in.

well i just had to look whats in a baby wipe just out of curosity, main ingredants are water and aloe barbadensis gel(aloe vera) and some other stuff.Would keep your hands soft anyways. :)
seems to be water soulable so i guess it wouldnt gunk up a bore. They seem to be pretty darn thin and rip very easy.If you had much fouling id think the jag would push right threw it,course we use the elcheapo generic baby wipes around the house, maybe a name brand might be a little stiffer.
If im gonna do any swaben i think i will stick with spit or plain old water :D

Shorty,
You are right!  We should stick to what was around back then.  By the Way,  when you are at vue, and you had your morning coffee and then you spend a few minutes in the bushes or in a portapotti, (one or two T's in "potti?") what do you happen to use to clean the sothern exposure?

A coupla years ago, some individuals brought "baby wipes" to camp!  Now I am a modest kinda guy who, thru knowing not to rock the boat, not trying to offend etc...especially in deer camp where everyone has their different ways to do things, you know...go with the flow.  But let me tell you something...  I always washing my ass and everything else on this body in a stream (please forgive my lingo-but I know you all would appreciate it-not vulgar really), and I don't care if it was 18 degrees out!  You feel like a million bucks- when the "pain" goes away (as my Dad used to say).  So, when I saw these baby wipes"; I laughed inside and had to rip 'em a good one!  Anyway, I'll be damned if I have to use a baby  wipe to cleanse myself when a lake or good ice cold stream is close buy, and I would rather be scalped to use it for anything else.  My hair and body is better smelling of campfire smoke and bourbon, cleansed by a real stream, than have the fragrance of the baby wipe flying from my gun barrel, or emitted from my skin in the deer woods!

"Keep your powder dry boys"....forget the baby wipes ----- :)  :)

Norseman,

So as a real mountain man, you would grab your shootin gun, wipe yourself, your rifle and your clothes with some good lye soap, and jump inna river?   Beat yerself with rocks to clean yer clothes, pour sand down yer pants and roll around a bit to clean yer body, and trust the river current ta clean out the rest?

I think I mighta gone through my trappin life stinky with a rusty rifle.

Hi Crow Feather,

In answer to your question...yep kinda!  But as YOU might be stinky then, and with a rusty rifle, but I would be as clean as my .54 cal  thunder stick! Only to smell of campfire, tobacco and a little fire water!
Oh, by the way-how many times do you wipe your bore 'between shots?  :-D  (Had to go there-LOL!).

Norseman,

Actually, I don't use baby wipes and I don't swab the bore tween shots.  I put no patroleum product on or in my rifles and I use moose milk on my patches.  The last ball goes down as smooth as the first.

I just put this in because there was a thread about swabbing tween shots. In that thread - nobody mentioned baby wipes.  Well, I read about the use of baby wipes in an old Muzzleloader magazine and I wanted to show that even tho I disagree with swabbing tween shots, I will still try to be helpful to those who do.

So to all of those who swab tween shots - give it a shot - er, swab.

ps  NOW I get it!  Different bore - As to yer answer - only me and God knows.

Crow-feather,
This has been a hoot! :)   Although I swab my smoke-pole with spit patches, I dang well ain't gonna clean ME the same way!
I just LOVE those modern inventions like toilet paper, running hot water, and soap!  After a couple of days of sponge baths or river washes, I'm ready for the 20 th century (note; not the 21 st).
