First time posting, great stuff here!
Was thinking about refinishing stock on a stainless encore that I think could use a little darkening and maybe a hand rubbed finish. Never tried to darken wood on any other projects before though, always wanted to keep the original. Anyway, looking for recommendations on products that will darken and still allow oil to be taken up. Any info or related experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've tried many different stains and most work after a fashon, but I have come to consider 'Pilkington Clasic Spirit Stains' as my standard. They seem to be the easiest to get to do the same thing over and over. I would not reccomend any water based stain products. Pilkington products are available many places but I usually include with my Brownells order.

Thanks for the help, Do you know if any large chain stores carry this stuff? Unfortunately my patience is thin and I would rather not wait for the mail. Whoever said patience is a virtue, obviously never had to wait for gun parts or accessories in the mail.

I certainly agree! I've had parts orders take as long as 3 weeks and S&W had a revolver that needed a hammer pivot for several months... Brownells has always been fairly quick for me. I live in central Missouri but if the order is placed before noon I usually get the item withing 4 days via USPS.. I particularly like the 'pre-64' color.. mimics the early Winchester stocks pretty well.
