Who has both 22 mag/17 hmr?

Just curious who has both and what is your views about the performance of each? I have a 22 mag but I want a 17 and really don't need both. I know the 22 mag has more knock down power and can be used on bigger game but how does the 17 really compare to it? I know the 17 is flatter shooting which I like and everyone is making ammo for it + the prices are dropping. Should I get rid of my 22 mag for a 17 or keep what I have? Like I said, don't need two rifle but would like to know if you could only have one, which one and why?  Thanks :D

vhunter, with that handle you could use the .17 HMR. I have both and they each fill a need. The .17 HMR is faster, flatter, more accurate and fun to shoot. For small varmits way out there it shines.  For varmits a bit larger and within 150 yards or so the .22 Mag shines. Get both you won't regret it, all you have to do is to buy the barrel now unless you want another Sportster receiver for your own reasons, thats not bad either. My vote, get them both, they are each great...cheapest way, order a barrel for your receiver....<><.... :grin:

I have an NEF, now with all 3 barrels...long rifle, mag and .17HMR.
  Msp has it right on ..the .17 is faster, flatter ans I believe, more inherently accurate.
    Go to my the H7R, NEF rimfire section, then see my string <Well I did it ..update>. I have outlined the whole test and hunting kills with both.
  You may wish to look at NEF...I have three guns in one now...when the  .17 Mach II comes out, for about 50 to 60 bucks, I can have 4 guns in one...

I have both, but I think that soon the 17 hmr will become trading material for probably a 223 in a Savage model 40.

Reason why is that for what I use(need) it for the 22 mag does what the 17 can do cheaper and with more wallop (energy) on tougher critters.

I have them both and will keep them.I really prefer the .22 mag.The .17 is just a bit too light.I've shot and killed coyote's with the .17,but I've lost a bunch too.In the same situation I think the .22 mag would have been a better choice.I also have a 5mm rem. that I like almost as much as the .22 mag.I wish I could get ammo for this at a reasonable rate.At $75.00 a box it's a bit to pricy to shoot.I still have about 6 boxes and when I'm down to 4 boxes this gun will be retired to the safe.

I had both.  If you read the above you find the 17 is flatter, faster, harder hitting and MUCH more accurate!  It is, also, more fun to shoot !!!!  There is NO question, the 17 is heads above the 22Mag!

I now join the group of used to have both.  I kept my 22 magnum (Marlin 25MN) and used the 17 as trading material for a Remington 700 in .222 Remington.

For some reason at 100 yards my 22 magnum shot a little tighter groups than the 17V when using Winchester Supremes or Remington v-max cartridges.  Setups were the same optics wise.  I figured the 22 mag (at the distances I am shooting packs a lot more wallop and is cheaper to feed.

Now the new .222 kicks both of their butts for tight groups at 100 yards shooting Winchester super-x 50 grain factory cartridges.

Why the 17 wasn't any tighter I don't know, they both had their triggers lightened to about 3 pounds and were wearing Nikon 3-9x40 pro-staff scopes.  The one from the 17V is now on the .222.

I am happy with the decision I made.  Others may have made a different one, and that is fine.

the .17 will shoot like this at 100yards... the .22mag wont


But both have their place .. the .17 for small varmits and the .22mag for
med sized varmits...

I'm with you 100% on that! I don't have a 22mag, don't need one, I've got a 17hmr and a .223, the 22mag just doesn't fill any needs in my book any more. I don't want to hear about cost, I shoot for fun, not to save money...... No offense meant to any mag owners. :grin:
