Upgrading to color?
« on: December 25, 2004, 12:06:28 AM »
I was thinking about upgrading from my Legend to a Legend C or Vista C, and was drooling over them at BPS when I saw it - the 60C. Bigger screen for my old eyes, twice the memory, and still not that much bigger than the Etrex series. I think I'll save my pennies for a while (ok, quite a while) longer. I don't want to have to upgrade again - should have listened to my wife   when she told me to get the bigger one to start with. I hate it when she's right. Should be used to it by now.

I am looking for a color gps.  But I am all over the map today.  The wife gave me a certificate for the gps unit of my choice.(I returned the last one she bought for me, and bought another.)  As soon as we got home from CHRISTmas with relatives I started searching the Internet.  Mentally I had made the jump from the Legend C to the 60C with it's larger memory.  I have like the features of the 60C since it came out.  Color, better battery life, and more memory.  Plus a good basemap.  What more could a guy want in a gps.  Then I did it.  I checked out the GPSMap76C.  Larger memory, 115MB.  Pre-loaded auto-routing basemap, and shares most features of the 60C.  And tide charts.

The price will be a factor.

The word is the color screen is good for old eyes.

Siskiyou,
I also looked at the Map76C, and it is very nice. But, I think that one is too big for me. I usually carry my Legend hooked on my backpack strap, or my rifle sling. The Map76 would be hitting me in the head. I think the 60C is a nice compromise between the size of the unit and the size of the screen, and it also has auto routing. I really don't need the electronic compass and the altimeter, stuff like that. I always carry a real compass, just in case. If the truth was told, the Legend that I have satisfies my needs very well. It would be nice to have more memory, but I really don't travel much, and it's not that much trouble for me to change maps before I go on a trip. It has never failed to get me back to the truck after dark.

I ordered a GPSMap76C on the 26th.  Hopefully it will be here later in the week.  I have downloaded the manual from the Garmin site so that I will have an idea on which buttons to push.

It has the same processor as the 60C but it has a 13MB base map versus a 8 MB base map in the 60C.  Twice the memory with 115MB, and the tide charts.  Which I will use when fishing the Delta.  In an earlier post I stated that "price" would be a factor.  The 60C appears to be great, but Garmin is currently offering a $50 rebate on the 76 series gps units.  The price on the 76C came in about $5 less then the 60C with the rebate.

Weight and size should not be a problem.  It is 1/2 oz heavier then the 60C but two or three ounces lighter then the old XL12.  A brick it is not.  But those ounces could be a factor when carried on a sling. (I should note that I install nothing on a sling.  I feel it could effect a shot on running game.) When compared to the Legend at 5.5 ozs.

I like the fact that the 60C and the 76C use Flash Memory and do not require that little hidden battery found in other gps units.  What is the life span of that little battery in my Legend, five years, or is it ten years?  I have not heard a good answer.

I'm getting the itch to upgrade and starting to look at color units now. I've got to decide what to do with my Magellan SporTrak Pro before, or if, I make the jump to a color unit. I've got both Streets and Destinations and the Topo for the Magellan, so it might mean new software too. Decisions, decisions. MI VHNTR

I was in one of the big box stores the other day.  They had the Magellan SporTrak Color for $199.+  As I recall it has a fair amount of user memory.   It had the 3-axal compass.  Not a bad deal when you already have the software.

Siskiyou, thanks for the heads up on the STC. It gives me another possible way to get a color GPS.  I was leaning towards getting a Garmin unit again. That would require me to sell everything and start with a whole new setup. Time to rethink things again.  :-)  MI VHNTR
