I took out the new Handi in 45-70 today for the initial test fire. I had two loads available: the Remington 405 gr Trapdoor load and the Winchester 300gr Partition Gold.

The 405 was pretty manageable, despite the slickness of the synthetic fore end. I had a 3 shot group over 2.5" at 50 yds.

The 300, let me tell you, this round is HOT! The rifle jumped out of my grasp every time I shot it :eek: and jumped higher each time. My last shot punched my shoulder in a spot that made my arm go numb.

Despite all this, my 3 shot group was about .75" smaller than the 405s.
It's going to be sighted in about an inch high at 50 yds.

I don't think my shoulder is going to take the synthetic stocks too well. I would be interested in trading them for a set of wood in like new condition, if someone is interested in a swap.

Pop the butt plate off; fill the cavity with #7½ or 8 shot to within a ¼" or so. Cover with hot glue & replace the butt plate. That should do the trick. I've done the same on my wife's & grandson's 20GA NEF shotgun. Really saved their shoulder & improved their shooting (no flinch).

Coltrane, my 300 grain Remi hp loads (which I THOUGHT were supposed to be light loads) really kicked the bejeezus out of me too :eek:

I have some 405 grain cast boolits on order right now that should be here Monday. I'm looking forward to testing them out to see how they shot.

Interestingly enough, the 300 grainers didn't shoot just real well in my gun. I'm hoping the cast boolits shoot better.

You might try the lead shot in the buttstock trick. I put an 8" length of 3/4" copper pipe filled with melted wheel weights in my stock. Mine is a wooden stock (no I don't want to get rid of it :wink: ), but you should be able to do something similar to your's.

I finally got to go out and shoot my 45-70 synthetic that I have added a mercury recoil suppressor to today. The loads that were harsh last time are now comfortable. I am very happy. No more flinching!

I bought the 7/8"x5"x16 ounce model. The Synthetic had a removable steel bar in it that was held in place with dense styrofoam. I tie wrapped the recoil suppressor to the steel and wedged it back in place with the same foam. Worked great nothing loose and felt MUCH better.

Coltrane,
Put some lead in the forend in addition to the butt, really slows down the barrel whip. I cast some plaster in the cavities then made a reverse mould from those to pour the lead. Adds about four ounces to the forend and makes a big difference when combined with the weight in the butt.

I am using the survivor forestock. If I can ever find time to get to a tire store I am going to get some stick on wheel weights to add some weight to it. But it did not feel bad just like it is.
