.458 (45/70) Recovered Bullets
« on: May 05, 2004, 04:46:43 PM »
Again this weekend I was able to get some shooting in, not only that I was able to recover some of the bullets.  My backstop was a forest Service pile of sand and granite gravel(more sand than gravel).

Rifle: Austin & Halleck 320 SN
Load: 100 grains T7 - Loose
Velocity: 1750 fps
Backstop: 107 yards - laser
Penetration: Approximately 8 to 10 inches into pile

Right to left:
1. Orange .458 MMP Sabot
2. Intact .458/350 grain Hornady Round Nose
3. A really nice mushroomed round
4. A second round that has lost lot its lead
5. The last three are empty copper jackets with some recovered lead.

It is my theory that the velocity was so great that is caused the stripping.  I use to get these same results shooting a 220 grain Hornady RN in my 300 win mag.  Moving to a Nosler Partition cured this problem.  I have order some Nosler .458 partition protected point 300 grain HP's.  I beleive they will solve the stripping problem, plus gain penetration depth.  The less expensive Hornady's will serve for target practice and the Noslers for Hunting. I also plan to try some Speer flat points.

When the Nosler's get here I will conduct the same shoot and compare the results

I really do like shooting the .458(45/70)from this inline.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

That is amazingly good muzzle velocity with 100 gr. T 7 and a 350 gr. projectile.

Here are some real-world averages:

Knight Extreme 100 gr. FFg, T7, Powerbelt 348 HP mv=1593

A & H 420: 100 gr. FFg T 7, PR Extreme HP 300 gr. mv=1691

Hodgdon T 7 FFg published data:

300 gr. Nosler Shots 50/44 1645 (90 gr.) 1713 (100 gr.).

Randy I just double checked my target you are right, again
The .458 350 velocities with 100gr. T7 (loose) were:
1648, 1650, 1629, 1618, 1629,

The 110 grain loads were:
1700, 1685, 1722

Thankyou for catching that

Those results should not necessariy condemn the Hornady 350.  Hitting a sand and dirt bank is much harder on a bullet than hitting an animal.

As 45-70 bullets go, the Speer 350 grain #2478 might be as tough as you will find however Speer thinks it should be hitting the 1900 fps mark in order to expand on game.

Sabotloader, based on your positive experience I called MMP and ordered 100 orange sabots.  I am an avid shooter of the .45-70 and this looks like a way to make a muzzle-loader into a 45-90 or 45-100 with traditional ballistics.  I am anxious to try the 300gr Hornady hollowpoints and several medium weight (325-340gr) cast bullets.  Thanks for the report!
Jim

I think you will like 'em.  They really perform well from one of my A&H's and last weekend I was able to shoot a few from my Remington as I changed scopes on it and was sighting it in.  They really held tight in that gun also.  I shot some a group of 3 Nosler .458 300gr. Partitions from the Remington and got a 2 1/4" group at a hundred yards (2 of them almost touched and the third I blew and it flew out a ways)  I told my wife I guess among all the other that leave when you turn 60 is your shooting ability.  I think you could shoot the Speer 400 grain also with good success.  Cayugad is shooting the Remington 405 gr. .458 with real good success.

I really want to try them in my side hammer Thompson also.

Good luck....
