Encore shell ejector problem??
« on: June 03, 2004, 03:56:03 AM »
Hi,
I took my sons new 7mm-08 stainless to the range to shoot for the first time.I was going to put a scope on it but decided to wait a couple years til he grew into the gun better. He will have to learn to shoot with open sights for awhile.
I cant say enough about how well the gun shoots, and I didnt make any modifications to it.Heard a few guys say its recoil was hard, but I didnt think so.
The only problems I found were the fact that not one of the spent shells I fired would eject!Had to pull them out with my leatherman pliers.Probably just an adjustment??Any Ideas or should I send it back to T.C.?or bring it to my local gunsmith?
Also there is a threaded screw which is behind the trigger on the trigger guard that cut my knuckle on recoil. Is this some sort of trigger adjusting screw?Cant figure why it is on there :?
I think this will be a great gun for my 12 yo son, first year hunter. Its fairly light and simple to use.He must complete a hunter safety course before buying his license and I'm going to take the course with him.Even though I have been hunting for over 35 years I think taking this hunter course will be good for me too. There are some areas open to hunting in other states that require a hunter safety course certificate. When I bought my license they were unheard of.I'm sure I will learn some things  Thanks for your time and ideas! Pa RR

The little screw in the back of the trigger guard is your overtravel adjustment screw.  What I did was run it in all the way then cock the gun (unloaded of course!) and then pull back on the trigger.  Continue to unscrew the adjustment screw until the hammer drops.  Then add another half turn or so and presto you are done.  I don't know what to tell you about the ejection problem?

Not to hijack the thread, but has anyone else found their overtravel screw too short?  I screwed mine in untill there was barely a couple of threads left in the hole and I could still cock and drop the hammer with some noticed over travel.  I suppose I could get a longer threaded lock screw, but this is just odd if you ask me.
As to the ejector, You said the bbl was new?  Is it a factory bbl?  I ask because there was someone here who said the factory accidentally installed the wrong extractor in their gun.  Does the extractor go anywheres near going into the extractor groove?

Yep, I have 3 contender frames and they all use almost all of the over travle screw. I did replace mine with a little longer screws.  KN

I have a 25-06 barrel that will not extract the shells 100% of the time.  I attributed mine to neck sizing so the round fits tight and the extractor just does not catch enough to hold.  It is annoying enough just doing it a couple of times every 10 shots or so, I would be frustrated if it did it every shot.  I would call T/C and see what they say to do.  Actually I might call them about mine since my 223 does not do it even with neck sized rounds.

Almost every "custom" barrel that I have ordered had to have some work done on it to eject the spent cartridge properly.  I have had two problems, one being that the extractor would not engage the cartridge at all.  The other being that the extractor was pressed into the cartridge with too much pressure and it would pull the cartridge out of the chamber, but then it took a lot of effort to pull the cartridge free from the extractor.

There is an easy fix for both problems.  Knock out the roll pin that keeps the extractor in place.  Carefully pull the extractor out of its slot.  Underneath the extractor you will notice that there is a spring that puts upward pressure on the extractor.  Just bend this spring to put more or less pressure on the extractor, depending on which problem you are having.

Thanks for the info.  I will look into that when I get home tonight.  I had noticed that my 223 is harder to load because the extractor sits higher into the barrel than the 25-06.  However I just assumed it was cut that way rather being spring loaded.

Is the ejecter not pulling the case out at all? These ejecters are only designed to pull the case out far enough to grab them with your fingers. There is one thing you can do and this is how you do it. You can take your barrel off and there is a small pin on the block under the barrel that holds the ejecter in. Now when you take this pin out (with a small punch) you will be able to slide the whole ejecter out of that block. Becareful sliding it out because on top(barrel is the top) of this ejecter is a very small piece of bent metal(bent like a smile)and this is what springs the ejecter out. I guess t/c calls this a spring. Now if there is no smiley piece of metal there  that could be why it is not pushing the case out. This gun of mine took some getting use to because of this, I was expecting that empty case to fly out of there when it was ejected. This may sound hard to do but it is not. I have custom bullberry barrel that I have had the ejecter out a half a dozen times.

rp7, Thanks for the how-to on the ejector. It seems like there isnt any spring there at all.when I break it open after firing the shell backs up a little but is still far too tight to remove by hand and there isnt much to grab on to.Hopefully that will solve this problem. Thanks to everyone who replied.

Glad that I could be of some service. I sit here most of the time twiddling my thumbs.
