biggest Grizzly
« on: July 04, 2004, 04:30:52 PM »
A friend sent me a couple of pictures of a grizzly that was stated to be the largest one ever killed, 12'6" at the shoulder, 14' at the top of the head and weighed 1600 pounds. According to the email, the contents of the bear's stomach showed he had eaten at least two people  and the email included a picture of a pretty well devoured person.

I don't know how to post the pics here but does anybody know if this story can be corroborated as it might just be some internet hoax? For what it is worth, the park official who killed the bear shot it repeatedly with a 7MM rifle, reloaded and shot a few more times.

I report, you decide.

Sorry to say but its a hoax. the bear was an honest 10'5" (big for hitchenbrook island). it wasnt charging anybody and it wasnt a maneater. It was  at close range (eating plants not people) and it was with a 338. The guy who shot it was an airman out of fairbanks (not a park ranger). The guy who shot back-up was using a 300winny and my sheep hunting partner a couple of years back.

Definitly dont believe everything you belive on the net.

Also the pictures that have been circulated of the partially eaten human, was from an incident about eight years ago when a Brown Bear slipped up behind a deer hunter down near Jeaneu,  killed and ate him.  I talked to the biologist that checked in the bear at Fish and Game.  Yes, it was a big bear but not near a record.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Man, this story is so used up that it is almost a joke anymore.
I'd like to comment that indeed the boar was a large one, a true Boone and Crockett Brown Bear, but if I remember right it had a skull that measured around 28 14/16. Maybe a bit bigger, a bit smaller. That is a huge bear and we all want one like him, but the fact is this skull was not invited to the 25th Awards program by B&C.
It's too bad that the original story describing this bear didn't include the fact that it was a Brown Bear. Actually it's too bad there were'nt any facts included about what the real story was, because it was a good one. There is a monumental difference in what constitutes a huge Grizzly skull and a huge Brown bear skull.
I would have to say any Grizzly skull over 26 inches is every bear hunters wet dream.
That skull could be enclosed in a seven and a half foot bear, or a nine and a half foot bear. It's all genetic's fellow bear hunters.

Thanks for the clarifications. Whatever the reality, as a non-hunter that bear seemed gigantic and indeed the eaten guy was bad. These things seem to happen around the world as in the recent news of a surfer in Australia attacked by presumably two great white sharks. No published pictures that I have seen of that case. Thankfully.
