Montana Fishing

Anyone planning on a fly fishing trip to Montana to our "Blue Ribbon" trout waters need to check further before finalizing plans.  

The upper Big Hole drainage is already under severe fishing restrictions and this is our runoff period, looks grim.

Sad that the state is still allowing unrestricted irrigation despite the extended drought.  Plain to see we fisherman are at the bottom of the totem pole.

I've been fishing most of Montana's steams since 1957 and the trout populations have been drastically depleted these last few years.

Greetings,
Just received my monthly update from my state senator in which he states that the US government is going to pay ranchers in the upper Bighole River drainage 1 million dollars to limit their irrigation usage.  The ONLY stated reason is for the protection of the Grayling.  The Bighole River is reputed to be the only river in which graying are present in the lower 48.  There is no mention of any interest in protecting the trout population which is what draws fishermen world-wide to this famous fishery.  I fully agree that the graying are important but so are the trout.
