Synthetic Handi Rifle 06 What's it Weigh?
« on: June 28, 2004, 02:57:50 PM »
I am considering purchasing the new synthetic/stainless handi in 30-06 to carry on an extended backcountry whitetail hunt this fall. The catalog lists it at 7lbs, but seems like it should be lighter. It also lists my sportster as 7lbs, but it along with my 12ga Pardner are both under 6lbs. Are the rifles really a whole pound heavier? I like the idea of a light short rifle for this hunt. Also like the stainless for being in the field up to 10days. I am also considering the "superlight" in 243 but I like the 30-06 better for deer. What do these guns "really" weigh?

The only thing I've got with syn stocks and a .308 hole in the barrel is my 30-30.
Weighs 6lb, 3oz with low comb plastic stock and open sights. I'm sure the 30-06 with monte carlo stock and scope rail would be between 6 and 6 1/2lb.

When I first bought my 280 rem synthetic handi rifle it weighed 7 lb. 7 oz on a postal scale. later I found and removed a 14 1/2 oz metal bar from the inside of the  stock, I believe there are posts on this or the old form where others have found the same type bar stock in there synthetic stocks.

That might explain why my sportster weighs closer to 5lbs. It appears to have the same stock as the synthetic handirifle and reciever should also be similar in weight. I could see the 30-06 barrel being heavier than the 22lr barrel, but I wouldn't think it would be more than a few onces. I don't think there is a metal bar in my sportster (I know there is one in my Ultra Slug).

I wish they made the super light in a bigger caliber than 243.

Deadeye's got a lightweight .308.
He cut the barrel down to 15" or so, and added an aluminum muzzle break. I wouldn't want to be standing next to him when he touches it off though. *BOOM*

More than one user of these forums has made a 16-17" 357 handi, that should be nice and light without all the noise and recoil.

Mitch.

I have a Ruger Deerstalker 44 carbine which is very light and for close in brush hunting. I am looking for something light with a bit more range. I like the versatility of the 30-06 and the simple design of the handi rifle for this extended backcountry hunt. I also like the idea of stainless. I was just hoping to keep it under 7lbs. I am also considering a Savage Weather Warrior in 308 which is 6.5lbs

Mine is standard barrel, synthetic stock and weighs in at 8.5 pounds with a Simmons 44 Mag scope, 3 x 10 - 44 and lightweight sling. Even with short barrel and syn. stock it is not aightweight by some standards. Easy to shoot, though.

Is that with the steel bar in the stock?

Sorry to take so long, but yes it is with the bar. Just got it late last deer season so I haven't got to shoot it a lot, but it shoots well. We hunt from tripods and quadrapods here so weight is really not a concern.
